Beautiful one off family walk. Hume Dam is massive and we didn''t really appreciate its sheer size until we walked across it. The entire walk is 3.5km. we didn't do all of it just enough to get to the other side of the dam wall. My 10 and 4 year olds enjoyed the walk, looking for Whistling Kites and Nankeen Night Herons (photos included) who rode the winds looking for fish. Along the walk we came across at least 4 of these birds. If you're not up for the long walk, then you can go to the viewing platform. I'd recommend doing both as you get a different perspective of the dam from each. For quick access to the dam from the viewing platform, take the stairs. There's a large open area for picnics and some undercover BBQ areas. At the beginning of the dam there are lots of signs with historical information too. We did this walk first thing in the morning in April so it was a bit cold but after walking a while we heated up and no longer needed our jumpers. There were a few people walking along the dam (most with dogs) but by lunchtime it was becoming very busy. The view alone was truely amazing so we made the kids walk it with us every day we were in the area. The mountain ranges are so stunning and the photos don't do it justice. I was here a couple years back. We did the drive from Beechworth, which was around 45 minutes to get to the NSW-Victorian border and explore the Hume dam. When going through my photos I found the images I have shared and thought to add a note on it. This is one of the biggest dams in the world and it is a masterpiece of engineering. Walking across the dam wall, you can see lake Hume on one side and the River Murray on the other side. Quite a long walk from one end to the other, but worth it. It also had a quite a family friendly environment. Beautiful views all around.

Very concerned as to why they are letting SO much water out.... It's clearly dropping fast.. There two nights and I'd say dropped about two feet.... The Murray was chockers so why ????....dont empty it again.... Some BIG Murray Cod in there up near the wall where they know they are safe... Smart fish there..... Beautiful views all around that area doesn't matter where you stay..... On your way to wall or back do yourself a favour and stop at Bonegilla Migrant camp...interesting place with lots of lovely stories and history....lovely very knowelgable friendly staff.

Turns out that this dam was a bigger deal than The Sydney Opera house at one time. Great place to have a walk and spend a couple of hours with your kids, family or by yourself. The sunsets here are good and it's a cool place to walk around and learn a bit about the history of this place. If you could see a gate opening or water discharging at some point, it is a great sight. You can feel the amount of water pressure gushing through a small opening and it is quite exciting. You can walk along on the top of the bridge and around the reservoir too.

An amazing dam with nice picnic area and lunch venue nearby. Hume Dam, formerly the Hume Weir, is a major dam across the Murray River downstream of its junction with the Mitta River in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The dam's purpose includes flood mitigation, hydro-power, irrigation, water supply and conservation. The impounded reservoir is called Lake Hume, formerly the Hume Reservoir. It is a gated concrete gravity dam with four earth embankments and twenty-nine vertical undershot gated concrete overflow spillways.

Hume Dam in Albury, NSW, is a remarkable feat of engineering and a picturesque destination. The vast reservoir offers stunning views, creating a tranquil setting for outdoor activities such as picnics and leisurely walks. The dam's significance in water management and its contribution to the region's landscape make it both an informative and visually appealing attraction. Whether you're interested in the engineering marvel or seeking a scenic spot, Hume Dam delivers a worthwhile experience.
