I loved this place. We walked up the hill to the right, anticlockwise around the river gorge, and I recon that’s the way to go. There are fewer people on that side of the river, with some spectacular views.
The views get better when you cross the river at the Road bridge, but you do meet more people exploring that side. To get back the the First Basin (the big pool in the river that is basically a small lake) is about a 3k walk, with some steep bits on the first half. The second bit is flatter, which is probably why there are more people there.
The suspension bridge was shut unfortunately, but I had a truly lovely 20 minute swim in the First Basin. The top three feet or so of the water are a lovely refreshing but not cold, temperature (on a warm autumn day). It’s colder if you dive down a bit, but it’s delicious to swim in. The water isn’t clear, so you can’t go chasing fish or anything, but it’s deep and there’s loads of room to have a really good swim.
Then we went on the chairlift which offers a brilliant view of whole basin both on the way up and back. The man at the top of the chairlift, who wore a superb peacock feather hat, was really friendly and answered all our questions and the peacocks, wallabies and pademelons. Oh yes, there are peacocks and peahens everywhere and semi-tame wallabies and pademelons around the top of the chairlift. I’m only sorry I didn’t ask his name or remember my phone for that part of our fun.
The only gripe was with the restaurant/snack place,at the top of the chairlift, which was shut by 3:30pm, so we, and several other hopeful folks, couldn’t get an ice cream. Missing a trick there, possibly.
Anyway, it’s a lovely day or afternoon out on a sunny warm day. It’s free, other than the parking and the chairlift ($20 there and back in March 2025), and it’s only a very short drive or shortish walk (under a mile and a half)...
