Easy walk but a big hill, can easily walk but may take some people longer with more stops depending on age/ability. About an hour loop passing an amazing view point overlooking bishop and clerk and the sea finishing with a nice walk around past the airstrip towards the ferry point (or vice versa if you go the other way round). There are stone steps leading down to the cliff with an info plaque telling the history. Please stay here more than 5 minutes (like some people did) and have a walk further down trying to spot all the wonderful fossils littered around the floor and walls (there are even some in the stone steps) dont just look at the big rocks and explore yourself. This and the painted cliffs are a must on Maria island as they relatively short and easy to fit into...

Fossil Cliffs Maria Island - WOW The fossil cliffs are where they mined for limestone to produce cement in the 1920s. It is very evident where the quarry was and it is incredibly interesting. Even more interesting was climbing down to the natural rock shelf at sea level. Every single rock (even mammoth boulders) appeared to be all shells. I have never seen anything like it. Such a rich abundance of fossilised shells. They estimate the fossil rich limestone and siltstone to be about 16m thick. Even to the uninformed this place was incredible. I can only imagine what it would mean to those that study fossilised remains. It is definitely a place that needs to be seen to be believed.

Very peaceful walk with lots to see and very clear tracks, we did the roughly one-hour circuit from Darlington and back. This involves the Fossil Cliffs but also beautiful clifftop views (note benches there where we sat to have lunch), large green sloping fields and bush, all with plenty of wildlife to see. The Fossil Cliffs themselves are well worth a visit. Short boardwalk down to the cliffs and large flat outcrop by the ocean. The ground is literally covered with 300-million-year-old sea life fossils you can search for, pick up, enjoy (but not take home!). Children likely to love this. Be careful near the cliffs as these are considered unstable due to erosion. Our tip is that this is also a great spot for...
