Feeding time at Foxeys So today was time to acknowledge my father’s Christmas and that requires somewhere special for a celebratory meal. As we were off to lunch and not dinner the choice of Foxeys Hangout at Red Hill made perfect sense, and it did not disappoint.
The setting at the winery is beautiful and so relaxing. The staff are very laid back and provide great service. You can enjoy the wines as well as the food and simply relax.
Having been here once before I was really looking forward to the variety of food that makes up lunch. You can select your own tapas plates at $12 each or get to try all nine options for just $35 a head which is sensational value. For us vegiequarians (pescatarians is the technical name) the restaurant easily adapts the menu to suit. We chose to let them feed us and were not disappointed.
The dishes often seem simple but the flavours are fabulous and the variety of food makes the tasting experience just wonderful. We began with Atlantic Salmon with a miso mayo. Then came the house baked bread with olive oil and pistachio spice. The bread is warm and soaks up the oil and spices just perfectly.
Next up is my personal favourite, the mushroom sausage rolls with a spicy tomato relish. These are absolutely delicious. The sesame rice with sugar snap is the genuine surprise among the menu as the flavour really comes through. Let’s not forget the roast capsicum with white anchovy, the tomato, feta and mint and round it out with the avocado and walnuts (minus the pancetta). Our carnivore friends would also get to taste some BBQ quail and spiced meatballs with a yoghurt dip.
We were a little naughty and added the triple cream brie with apple to finish and it was devine. Could have gone with the double cream blue with figs in port or an old fashioned vanilla ice cram with hot chocolate sauce. My partner enjoyed a glass of the Pinot Gris as well as out coffees.
At the end we had eaten just enough and felt fabulous. Wonderful service and a beautiful view (see pic) certainly helps. Kudos to the team as well who are donating all tips this month to out volunteer fireys for their incredible efforts.
If you have not visited Foxeys you should add It to the list. Definitely worth a trip down...
Read moreThis is a very good dining option in this area. Sitting inside is nice. But, there’s also a lovely area out back. Sitting here under an umbrella with a fine look out over the hills and vines is near bliss. It was superb here on a temperate day like today.
We chose a number of the share platters. The bread with beautiful olive oil and pistachio spice is an excellent value dish. There’s a good amount of very good bread provided. The oil and spice are of superior quality too. The asparagus dish works well. The spears are fresh, huge and cooked to perfection with a lovely residual crispness. The asparagus is combined skilfully with blood orange segments and goat cheese. It’s a fetching fish. The meatballs are good too. Tasty and moist with a nice hint of spice. They were cause for debate though with my partner saying she preferred the ones at nearby Green Olive. Me, I like both. The avocado and pancetta with walnuts dish satisfies too. All freshness and quality. The combination works well. In addition, the mushroom sausage rolls with tomato sauce are terrific. The sauce comes with a nice little bit of heat. All in all, we really enjoyed all of the share dishes we tried.
The coffee to finish was mighty. Top quality brews. Service was lovely from several servers throughout our time here and we thought the cost of the meal with several wines was also very reasonable. As I say, Foxeys is a very good option in the area. You could confidently wager a large amount that we’ll...
Read moreFirst of all, it's insane to me how this place doesn't take any bookings, not sure how you can organise or be prepared but okay. Could save a lot on food and staff costs. So we walk in for 4 of us and get told that we can do a wine tasting while we wait for a table - sure sounds great! After 10 minutes, not even on the second half of the wines, we get told our table is ready and need to finish the wine tasting, so we get given 3 glasses of different wines to bring to our table, so now theres 12 glasses of wine.. OUTSIDE in the horrible cold wind. Why not let us know "Hey we will have a table soon but it will be outside is that okay?", that way we can enjoy the wine tasting and have a table we're happy with.. The food was a horrible experience. Everyone got their bread before us which was the first course (also not fresh, its from the flinders bakery) we got it at the end when we asked for it but they blamed it on the oven..(so plan ahead then?) The quail was flavourless, tough and burnt, and the dish at the end with the walnut and black sauce crap tasted like Vegemite heated in the microwave poured over the top. Its a shame how nothing is made from scratch in house anymore. I used to work in this region, and how sad it has all become. Hire real chefs that know what they're doing instead of 18 year old kids that wipe their nose with their hands and smear it on their apron. Thank God we had vouchers cos I would never...
