A Nature Lover’s Gem Less Than an Hour from Melbourne

Lysterfield Park and Lake is an absolute hidden treasure, conveniently located around a 50-minute to 1-hour drive from Melbourne depending on where you're coming from. What makes it so special is just how much it offers — whether you're after an active day out or simply a relaxing escape into nature, this park has it all.

One of my favourite things to do here is explore the network of hiking trails that wrap around the lake and surrounding bushland. The tracks are generally well-maintained and cater to a range of fitness levels, from casual walkers to more serious hikers. If you're into mountain biking, Lysterfield is especially well-known for its extensive trail network. The mountain bike trails are well-marked, offering everything from gentle cross-country routes to more technical and challenging loops, making it a real playground for riders of all skill levels.

For those looking for a more relaxed visit, the lake itself is a beautiful spot to sit and unwind. There are plenty of grassy areas ideal for picnics, with BBQ facilities conveniently located nearby. The BBQs work well and there are shelters too, although I will say the toilet facilities could use some improvement — they’re quite basic, and better lighting, more regular servicing and cleaning would really lift the amenity here. That said, they serve the purpose if you're prepared for the usual limitations of bush park facilities.

What really sets Lysterfield apart is the abundance of native wildlife. On almost every visit, I’ve seen kangaroos and wallabies grazing in the open clearings, and if you're lucky and keep your eyes open, you might spot an echidna shuffling through the undergrowth. The birdlife is just as impressive — kookaburras, parrots, eagles, and a variety of other native birds can be seen and heard throughout the park, creating a wonderfully immersive natural experience.

Lysterfield Park is great year-round, but in my opinion, Spring and Autumn offer the best balance — milder temperatures, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds than the peak of summer when it can get quite busy (especially on weekends and public holidays). In winter, the park can feel a bit grey, damp, and overcast, but for those who don’t mind braving the cold, it still offers a very different,...

Lysterfield Park is a gem for anyone who loves the outdoors, and from my experience, it’s a place that offers something for everyone. As a hiker, I’ve enjoyed the variety of trails that wind through bushland, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding hills. Whether you're looking for a casual stroll or a more challenging trek, the trails cater to all levels, and the peacefulness of the park makes each hike feel like an escape from the city.

For cyclists, Lysterfield is a well-known hotspot. The park is famous for its mountain bike trails, including some that were used in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The routes range from beginner-friendly paths to more advanced tracks with jumps and technical sections, making it a thrilling destination for all cycling enthusiasts. I’ve always noticed how well-maintained the tracks are, with clear signs, which makes navigating easy even for first-timers.

Families will love Lysterfield Park too. It’s perfect for a day out with kids, with picnic areas, BBQ facilities, and plenty of open space to run around. The lake has designated swimming areas, and children often enjoy paddling in the shallow waters. There are also gentle walking tracks that are stroller-friendly, so even young children can explore the park’s beauty.

Overall, Lysterfield Park is a versatile destination that brings together nature lovers, adventurers, and families looking for a peaceful day out. Whether it’s hiking, cycling, or enjoying a lakeside picnic, there’s something here...
