Came for the fossicking, stayed for the scenery; Outstandingly beautiful creek and river bank area. Gold panning, let’s face it it’s different and sounds exciting, the prospect - pun intended - of finding gold. We all know we won’t get rich, but it’s different and fun, especially for kids. Now, it’s in the middle of nowhere; there are no coffee shops or stalls, no drinking fountains or even water, so go prepared. Take water/juice, snacks, towels with you, and “go” before you go. And when bored of panning, find the damned area and sunbathe and swim

Excellent walking trail right in town. Good for all fitness and most accessibility levels. Popular spot for dog walkers and even a little swimming spot for dogs. Entrance to the path is open in 4 spots including the newly opened path underneath Pengally bridge. This section will soon connect to the larger river to rail walk along the Mary River.

Worth a wander off you are curious and want to have a go at gold panning. You need to have all your own tools of the trade. The river is very accessible and is running as a creek.

Tourists trap , nothing to see there , nothing to find if its a good sun burn and time lost . Gympie council , along with the surrounding councils force ppl who are serious fossickers to drive 8 or 10 hours north and south where there is honest grounds . Deep creek : where all the rubbish from the mines and town ended up . The creek is not original , its a man made creek , the original one was diverted to dig it out . The place is cleaner than a hospital bed if you want the truth . But its a dying town and no one will have the honesty to tell you that the gold is that deep and so little that finding a nugget there is impossible . Even gold companies let it go .. for the kids ? Personally i would not bring mine there , full of unfilled holes , snakes and to access the river where its interesting is dangerous and so overgrow than a cow would not pass . Not to mention the last floods destroyed the place .. more rubbish than ever .. Want to go fossicking , forget Gympie and around here , go to Warwick or up north , dont spend your money here . Gympie council , Fraser coast council , state government , open state forests for fossicking like nsw did ! Then i will remove this honest and...

A great afternoon spent digging in the creek, the mud and anywhere we thought there was Gold. No we didn't get rich but there was few bits of fairy dust sized bits of gold in the bottom of the pan. We were lucky enough to have an experience fossicker there to show us how to pan and also to know what we were looking for. He had found a couple of tiny bits! Remember, if you don't have all the gear, get your licence and hire a pan at the Tourist Info Building at...
