After being in palliative care for 5 weeks I asked my partner to bring me to Gympie. After unloading my electric wheelchair and putting the harness on my assistance dog I got to the entrance only to be refused service in the cafe despite there being an outdoor area. The older gentleman on the desk was very nasty and abusive and even the two locals (friends of his were shocked). I then said not to worry I would wheel around the park but I needed to get out of the sun as with losing my hair my head was getting burnt. I said my husband would come and look around the museum on his own to which the reply was “No he won’t I’m closing it!” One of the locals said “why the bl00dy hell are you closing it” to which he said it may rain. As we came away a young couple went up to the desk and he let them through. So basically I was discriminated against for being in a wheelchair, I came away in tears. This was at 10:40am. We are members of a number of fossicking, mining and prospecting clubs and none of our volunteers would ever treat...
Read moreExtremely run down, some rooms closed. Lunch took 45 minutes and we were only one of two families that ordered at that time. Noticed in the comments book that people before us had waited an hour and 37 minutes! After reading other comments discovered that I could have booked a tour which wasn't advised at the time of entry nor was it made known that I needed to ask for a key to access the outer buildings that weren't accessible via the walkway because of poor maintenance. You would have thought that the middle weekend of school holidays tour guides would have been made available. This would have to be the worst condition museum that we have ever seen, and after touring the country for a year we have seen A LOT of museums. Considering the importance of this museum to Gympie and Queensland it's an indictment of the lack of commitment to history. Definitely won't be back nor would I recommend it to others. Food was delicious but took way to long especially when taking into account the time of ordering which was 1.45pm. Way...
Read moreA tale of 2 parts. 1st part, the not so good - the Cafe. We only ordered 2 coffee's and 2 biscuits. We did go on a weekend but there may have been at most 12 people sitting down, about 3 couples ahead of us waiting and rest been served food/ drinks. We waited 25 minutes, I know there was takeaways but with the amount of staff v number of people very slow service. The drinks & biscuits were fine. 2nd part the good, the museum very very surprising. It's in various buildings with each one a different look at history not just of Gympie but of life. Gold diggin in one, a nice tribute to the history of milk and various ways of it being processed. One set up as a single person school, one as a look back on radio and audio visual, black smithing large and small machines. The list goes on and on. I only spent about 3hrs there but have easily spent 6 or 8 hours. Do yourself a favour and visit,...
