Located in Newhaven, Forrest Caves is the perfect place to explore in Phillip Island that isn't overpopulated by massive crowds. Forrest Caves are natural rock formations that were formed over time by eroded cliffs. It is best accessed at low tide where you can explore the intricate caves and rock pools. As you walk around the various formations, you will notice different colours in the cave. This is due to the sun's rays that filter through the structure daily. When exploring the rocks, keep an eye out for pot holes. I saw a few hidden ones that you wouldn't want to fall into! To get to the caves, travel to the Forrest Caves car park. Once you arrive in the car park take the stairs up and over the sand dunes. At the bottom of the stairs, walk left for 500 metres along the beach and you will arrive at Forrest Caves. Depending on when you visit, look out for the short-tailed shearwaters that fly around the beach during the months of September to May unfortunately didn't see any however other people have said it's amazing. All in all, absolutely loved exploring Forrest Caves as the area was super secluded and the beach was fairly untouched. Just to stress again, ensure you visit at low tide (in the morning) otherwise you won't be able to explore the entirety of the inside...
Read moreForrest Caves-sea cave structure seems to have gone through many phases of erosion before settling into its current state. Gaining entry into the sea cave is fun but I wouldn't recommend it at high tide; please make sure your visit is during low tide. My excursion was during high tide, and so I had to wait until the waves subsided and then make a run into the cave before the waves came crashing back. Inside enjoy the sounds of the waves outside and marvel at the sea cave structure. It feels like a rock fortress of solitude. The Forrest Caves are located just before The Cape Kitchen, left off the main Phillip Island Road. Walk up the steps from the carpark on to the beach, then turn left. Again the caves are accessible at low tide. A 45 minute return walk, passing by large sand dunes, which are home to thousands of shearwaters from...
Read moreCheck tide times. Plan your visit so you arrive at the carpark at least 15-30min before lowest tide. It's a decent trek up and down the stairs to reach the surf beach (yes, surf beach, be prepared for wind!). Then head left towards the rock outcrops. Wear surf shoes. Watch where you place your feet..Look for the sand bar - do not just keep close to the rocks as there are often deeper channels right next to the bigger rocks. Be prepared to get wet... Hv change of clothes/ shoes/ towels in the car! (Keep your smartphones in waterproof pouches or at least well above your waist as you walk out into the water to access the caves) Watch out for rising tide, change of weather, tell someone your heading out there so they know to look for you ...
If you missed the low tide.... Just climb up on top of the caves and look down . Then plan...
