The Peak Hill gold mine is a historic gold mining site located in New South Wales, Australia. It is situated approximately 30 kilometers south of the town of Parkes and 400 kilometers west of Sydney. The Peak Hill gold mine was originally discovered in 1889 and quickly became a significant gold mining center in the region.
The mine has a long and interesting history. During the early years of operation, gold was extracted using underground mining techniques, with shafts reaching up to 250 meters deep. In the 1930s, the mine shifted to open-pit mining techniques, with the excavation of a massive pit which is now over 1 kilometer long, 500 meters wide, and up to 150 meters deep. The open pit mining operations ceased in 2002.
During its long history, the Peak Hill gold mine has produced over 1.2 million ounces of gold. The site is now owned by Canadian mining company New Gold Inc, who acquired it from Australian mining company, Dioro Exploration NL, in 2010.
Today, the Peak Hill gold mine is no longer in operation, but the site is still significant due to its historical importance and the large open pit excavation that remains. The site is open to the public, and visitors can take a self-guided tour of the area and learn about the history of gold mining...

I think it's worth having a look if you're interested in this type of thing or you happen to be passing by and it's convenient to stop. I wouldn't go out of my way again to...

At the mine you can find an informative display on the area and relics of old. There is a waking path around the mine but no signs on the length or difficulty. Along the path you come across platforms where you can take the opportunity to take those happy snaps. I found it interesting and enjoyed stretching the legs. Definitely worth the effort and a must when...
