On the long road to Uluru, we rolled into a town that barely whispered its name. No crowds, no clutter. Just stillness. But there, just off the bitumen, something ancient stirred.

Not a museum in the polished sense. Not a place of plaques or pomp. Just a field of giants — windmills, worn and weathered, each one holding the wind like memory.

They stood proud in the dust, backs to the sun, arms open to sky. Guardians of another time, still turning, still speaking, if you know how to listen.

This was Penong. Not a detour. A remembering. A place that asked for nothing but gave a moment I’ll...

The town has done a great job getting people to stop and appreciate water and where resources come from Great collection of windmills I would definitely recommend to stop here as it is very close to the main road Girl at Info centre in Port Augusta did not even know the place existed when I asked where to find the collection of Windmills on the Nullarbor but Google came to the rescue and glad...

Great open aired museum for the famous Penong Windmills. You get to walk among them and see the different materials used to build them, there is a swing activated water pump, you can sit on and swing back and forth and it pumps water out at the side, your kids will love it (so do adults). Worth a visit as it’s what Penong is famous for

Being a connoisseur of windmills personally, I had to stop to look at Comet, Australia’s largest windmill. Just off the Eyre highway, it’s a small stop with a few different types of windmills. There’s a small bench there but now public toilets or other facilities. You’ll have to go back up the road for that.
