Hunter Wine Lab — Attraction in Pokolbin

I found this place on recommendation from Steve, the Head Winemaker at Piggs Peake “They are doing some extraordinary wines and are great fun to talk to.” Nathan greeted me, treated me like royalty, stayed for the super nerdy wine stuff along with a great history of Mother Vines and varietals both recognised as favourites locally, but also some great inventive and difficult grapes for the Hunter like their stunning Pinot Noir.

The wines and the hospitality were FIVE STARS 🌟

Beautifully balanced chardonnays (try the Hungarian Vs French Oak - both perfect examples of spice / vanilla oak interaction), the Semillon Chardonnary blend blew me away as a best of both worlds scenario, and the Semillon bubbles the first wine down really set the scene for the quality of the whole range.

Could not recommend this experience more!! Nathan is clearly an extremely knowledgeable wine maker and brewer. My girlfriend and I booked the chocolate and wine pairing. Every wine I tasted was fantastic and the winemaker allowed us time to experience our own unique and palettes while also explaining the processes and different variables that the different wines had and used. We ended up purchasing a bottle of their 2023 Chardonnay which despite my partner not normally liking Chardonnay she absolutely loved. This is a winery giving you really intimate and genuine experiences and selling and creating fantastic unique wines that are made differently and with my care and attention than the other big names in the hunter. At the time of writing this I can see winelab has a perfect 5 star rating! And I am NOT surprised in the slightest. Winelab was my last stop on my wine tour and I was a little over tastings by this point and getting quite tired…. But WOWWWWW! i can’t fault the staff here who are experts in hospitality, made me laugh, taught me about their wine and processes and were just absolutely LOVELY. We got a tour (only winery to offer us this) and Nathan spoke at length about their process which was really really interesting. We got to learn about what makes winelab different.
