I really beautiful, peaceful and spiritual place. Of great significance for the local Indigenous peoples. Cathedral Gorge (sometimes called Cathedral Chasm) is one of the most famous natural amphitheatres in Purnululu National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its striking orange-and-black striped sandstone domes. It was massive formed by erosion. The high red sandstone walls create incredible acoustics, making it feel like a natural cathedral..The walk from the car park is easy as it passes through domed rock formations before opening into the huge amphitheatre itself where an echo effect can amplifies sound dramatically. Although just sitting...
Read moreProbably one of the 'must do' hikes on most peoples visit to the Bungle Bungles. The trail head starts at Picaninny day use area, moderately easy with some climbing over rocks. Hand rails and ladders have been installed. Cathedral Gorge actual is magnificent, overhanging cliff rocks, small beach, narrow glimpse of the sky. We visited early in the morning. My advice is to visit as early as possible to take advantage of the morning light, cooler conditions and less crowds. This gorge is very busy, later in the morning the carpark does fill up. For the more energetic, there is a smaller womens gorge just off the Cathedral...

Rain fell the day before we entered the Bumgles causing some of the smaller creeks to fill. We had to wade through waist deep water and hot temperatures to get to the gorge. As you approach the gorge and enter the enormous cavernous cave, you become speechless and just need to take it all in. You will need to appropriately plan your journey here. A 4wd, plenty of food, water, supplies and weather protection is necessary. Long drive there...
