In 2015 we flew over the Bungles Bungles (Purnululu NP) and crossed it off our bucket list of the "must do and must see" places in life. Due to our extended covid19 Australia trip we put them back onto the list 2021 - this time to see them from the ground. WHAT WOULD WE HAVE MISSED OUT ON! It turned out to be one of our highlights of this trip walking the Dome - Cathedral gorge but particularly Echidna chasm - the reason the Bungles Bungles made it into the world heritage listing. Accompanied by our little 3year old as our walking tracks leader - truly breathtaking stuff.
Towing our AOR camper the track in and out was far from easy. Despite the grader was through a couple of weeks prior - the drive needs good 4x4 equipment- front and back - and an experienced captain. All tyres deflated to 28psi also the camper an absolutely must. Several creek crossings- some with very steep entry or exit points - put demand on the towing vehicle and the camper. I put my LC200 in low gear after about 20km in to ease the pressure on the automatic. Lots of fun and excitement- if you have the right gear. We took 1.5hrs for 53 km drive to the visitor centre, but we can see why other take up to 3 hours or decide to turn around halfway in. Hate to experience it prior to the grading towing our camper. However - don't miss this opportunity when you are in the area - to walk them on the grounds is nothing like flying over them! We stayed 3 nights in the Walardi campground - booked online- pick your spot when arriving after check-in at the visitor centre. Toilets are okay and they have water taps and some shaded places. Nice camp hosts too - but hot - so do your walks early in the mornings and take plentyof water. Enjoy your...

First warning, the track in is not for the faint hearted (even when graded) but if you can do that you will be fine. Its over 45kms from the front gate to the Visitors centre, which you have to stop at and check in if you are staying at either campsite (Walardi or Kurrajon). Special mention to Robin who was both super friendly, and helpful on the desk. She will point out where to go and at what time.
Now we visited during a massive heatwave so we decided to hike early and catch sunrises and enjoy the views without the heat. Choose your places to hike according to driving distance to campground and ability (be very sure on ability because some walks are very VERY uneven and can be unsafe during warm weather if not prepared).
Both sites offer a bore water tap and drop dunnies.
If hiking is out of the question, then would recommend booking in a heli tour, the Bungles are even better from a distance.
Have the best time and PACK more water then you think...
Read moreThe woman at the visitor centre, Kate I believe her name was needs to learn how to speak appropriately to people calling up seeking information. Called up twice for a few questions I wanted answered. Im a single mother travelling with my infant son so I wanted to get as much information as possible as to whether we head out or not. Both times she was blunt, rude and offered little to no assistance whatsoever and just told me “you need to make that call” How can I make the call when I have no clue what the roads are like, that’s the whole point of me calling and asking for assistance and advice. Found better help reading these google reviews and unfortunately will not be visiting. For such a beautiful place it’s such a shame that’s it’s such a hassle to get out there and a lot of people will miss out on experiencing...
