We recently visited Shep’s Mound in Mascot, and it was an awesome experience! Just the two of us friends went, and we were blown away by the view — it’s definitely the #1 spot to watch flights up close. ✈️
Located right next to the Sydney Airport runway, we saw aircraft from Qantas, Jet Airways, and many more flying in and out. It was a sunny day, which made the views even better. You can actually watch planes landing and taking off in a line — a fascinating sight as one flight follows another in perfect sequence!
There’s parking available, and we recommend visiting in the early morning or evening when air traffic is busiest. It’s a great spot for aviation lovers, families, and photographers.
We’ll definitely be coming back with more friends and family! It would be amazing if they had a small hut or kiosk selling coffee or snacks, but otherwise, feel free to bring your own food (BYO) — just make sure to dispose of any rubbish in the designated bins to keep the area clean.
Highly recommended for a relaxing and unique...
Read moreA magnificent spot for hard core plane spotters, somewhere to pass the time for anyone slightly enthused by the smell of jet fuel and awesome for some time out with the little ones... And it's free, and free parking to boot! The only downside is a lack of toilets and the shelter won't protect you from from the cold southerlies....
Toilets, food and coffee are nearby (the BP and McDonalds are one minute away via an internal roadway) so grab a coffee and head on up. If you plan on being there a while, a fold up camp chair adds to the comfort levels.
Saturday afternoons are good with plenty of arrivals and departures. There are two level gravelled platforms that let you photograph over the fence, almost at the point the heavies are rotating on 34L, and the taxiways are right next to the mound. RIP old friend Shep, it's a worthy honour with...

I’ve spent a few afternoons here, and it’s always a relaxing experience, especially with the added thrill of watching the planes. And when the sun sets, the runway gets this amazing golden glow, making it even more magical. The area is also pretty spacious, so you can find a good spot without feeling cramped. A must-visit for aviation enthusiasts or anyone looking for a unique way to spend some...
