Recently I went to this boat ride with my wife and 2 kids. We all enjoyed a lot. Views of island and cliffs are amazing. I haven't seen such geography anywhere else. On the way we saw seals, dolphins and eagles. Captain of the boat and his assistant were friendly and they have good knowledge of this area. Even though this ride initially looks costly looking at a price tag of around 430 AUD for a family of 4 for 3 hours, but it's totally worth. We booked our tickets through RACQ website and got a decent discount. It is not clearly mentioned in their website but the boat rides start at 2 locations at port Arthur as well as eagle hawk neck. So if you are coming from Hobart by your own transport then you will cross Eagle hawk neck on the way to port Arthur office and their tour bus may take you back their. We got our boat in eagle hawk neck and came to port Arthur. There is ample parking space near their office. Depending upon the season, take warm clothes with you. We went in April, and it was cold and windy in the waters. If you forget, then they even sell warm clothes in their office / shop. Even though boat was full, our captain made sure that everyone get's opportunity to view and click photographs by turning the boat from side to side. Still my suggestion is to sit in the middle of the boat and try to avoid the last 2 rows. We got the second last one and it require some effort to click photograph from there. There is a toilet...
Read moreI had a long think about this experience and i feel it really is a mid experience even with the beautiful day and kind staff. It really isnt a good experience but cant say it was bad.
A well run and manufactured experience through the Tasman Island, Port Arthur and Eaglehawk Neck.
Exciting rides through the water with a capable skipper and guide but beyond their scripted interactions, there wasn’t really anything else.
The bad was how this experience is really also influenced by the people around you. My recommendation is to be the biggest D’head and be selfish on a packed boat. Dont believe them when they say there isnt a bad seat on the boat as there is a bad seat/seats.
Unfortunately their money well of typical tourist means certain behaviors are tolerated but good things do come to an end.
So be as feral as those around you or you’d be bullied to move seats to accommodate people who are rude and entitled. There’s no repercussion for bad behavior so might as well double down to get the best experience for yourself.
Unfortunately a one and done for me but my recommendation to this tour company is to m have a seat booking system for allocated seats. You could also charge more like airlines for the seats.
Note that if you’re booking with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys they run many different tours so you may have similar interactions and challenges. Be ready to stand your ground and...
Read moreOnly went down to the island, not round and up the east coast to Eaglehawk Neck, so I was a bit disappointed, after all the hype and gorgeous pictures everywhere. The winds were forecast to be too strong, but it turned out they weren't too bad, so we could have done it. What we did see was amazing though, but hardly any wildlife, just a few seals, half of whom vanished on our arrival. I had problems getting good pics because the deckhand/assistant kept standing right in the middle of the view. And the pics I mostly wanted were while the boat was moving - fast. So many didn't turn out. The spray/wind coats they supply were good and very welcome, except there were no pockets! So nowhere to put your phone safely in between stops. Even if your own clothing has pockets, the coats do not have an opening (they go on and off over your head), and are long - to the ankles, so you cannot access your pockets. The boat skipper insisted on driving the boat through the wake of the other boat wherever possible, which while thrilling, made the ride even bumpier. He was informative though. BTW, it was freezing - went early spring. Having said all that, though, it was an experience...
