Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine site review with Go West Tours.
We joined the 9 am tour with about 25–30 people, and it was very underwhelming and simply boring. The highlight was supposed to be visiting the mine site, but all we saw was an abandoned pit, basically a huge hole with some water at the bottom and a few tracks along the rim (no trucks to be seen). They showed us an old truck and excavator, but nothing you couldn’t see in the town.
We were lucky enough to catch a train being loaded with iron ore, otherwise this would have been a one-star experience. Apparently, Rio Tinto has restricted access to the more exciting areas they used to show, which makes the current version of this tour feel like a bit of a joke.
What made it worse was the lack of explanation: there was no clear presentation about how iron ore extraction actually works, not through the guide, not even with a simple poster or diagram at the lookout. It would have been so much better if they added a short video or animation on a bus screen or in the visitor centre to bring the process to life.
On top of that, no water was offered, not even to kids.
Overall, very disappointing and not worth the money in its current form, $47 adult and $20 child...

Read moreGreat place to stop and learn about the surrounding areas. Don’t be fooled by the map on the notice board out the front - it’s from 2014 and there have been some subtle changes to the roads since then. Best to go inside and ask if you’re unsure.
To the left of the buildings entrance there are clean toilets and showers (Showers are $4) and there’s dish washing facilities for campers down beside the building as well. There’s plenty of shade nearby for a break...
