A very interesting and unique geological site. Below the mountain peak is a burning coal seam. The heat, venting gases and changes to the landscape are easily seen. The walk from the picnic area and car park up to the peak is steep in parts, though there are basic steps for most of it. A reasonably fit person will have no trouble getting to the peak in about 40 mins. There is lookout about 1/3 the way up and a solitary picnic table at about the halfway point. I visited on a foggy winter morning and though missed out on the views along the way, the quiet forest scenes were a sight of themselves. I saw half-a-dozen Eastern Grey Kangaroos along the path, as they bounded away at the sound of my footsteps. I also observed many Crimson Rosellas and a couple of Kookaburras. Well worth a stop, if your travelling along the New...

The track up, itself, is a pleasant walk for those who like us enjoy walking. It is about 3.8km return with one steep section of stairs over only about 100m or so, ok for anyone of average fitness. It is also very well made and has quite a bit of informative and interesting signage. Thumbs up and thank you to those who put it together.
The burning mountain showed only some shimmering but no smoke when we were there but the small area of barren ground was interesting as was the "natural brickwork" a little further down.
The large rest area at the bottom had flush toilets and can be used for camping; albeit with only a little level ground and being quite busy from the road and some trains (despite...
Read moreWas a great walk. At the top you could smell the sulfur from the burning Mountain and the terrain was wild, the natural brick rock was really interesting. You could see the heat shimmer from the underground fire, probably would have felt hot if you went over there. The path says not to approach that area however as the ground is unstable.
If you are in the area, I'd really recommend checking it out. The path up has some areas without shade so I'd recommend sunblock and a hat.
The most difficult part was some of the inclines, however they were all steps, so take it slow and you should be OK. There are many seats along the path to catch your breath during...
