Today, I visited the City of Melville EcoHub, located within the beautiful Piney Lakes Reserve in Winthrop, to gather information about the resources and services they offer for children. I work at a local childcare centre and was keen to explore ways we could connect our programming with their environmental initiatives.
Upon arrival, I was warmly greeted by Chloe and Louise at the front desk. Chloe, in particular, was incredibly helpful and informative. She guided me through a range of opportunities that I could facilitate with the children in collaboration with the EcoHub.
While the EcoHub doesn’t currently host excursions themselves, Chloe explained that it is still possible to organise an excursion led and facilitated by our own team, with the EcoHub space available for hire. This flexibility is a great option for educators looking to engage children with nature in a more hands-on way.
One of the standout offerings is their FREE toddler program, which runs during the school term. It's a fantastic initiative that supports young children in developing an appreciation for the natural environment and encourages responsible, sustainable practices from an early age.
The EcoHub is filled with great resources for both children and adults. It's a welcoming, inclusive space that really caters to community learning. During my visit, a composting workshop was taking place, which highlights the range of practical, eco-focused events they host regularly.
And on a lighter note, a special mention goes to their excellent coffee—my dad, who accompanied me, gave it a big thumbs up!
Overall, the EcoHub is a valuable community resource and well worth a visit for educators, families, and anyone interested in sustainability and...
Read moreI recently attended two guided walks at Piney Lakes that were organised by the Melville EcoHub. Both were led by the amazing Rickeeta (Ricki) Walley. The first walk was a Makuru walk that focused on the plants, animals and activities of the Noongar rainy season (June/July.) The second was a Djilba walk (August/Sept, Noongar “first spring.”) Both times, Ricki impressed me with her exceptional knowledge and her presentation and facilitation skills, especially for someone so young. There was very little repetition between the two walks and I particularly liked all the insights about Noongar language from the second walk. We were even treated to some sublime singing at the end on one walk, which my companion and I commented we have never seen on any of the walking tours all around the world! Outstanding work,...
