This destination is more than just the Abbey Library, although that is the main attraction. It’s exquisite. The entire place is SO worth visiting. There are several museums under one roof - all part of the Abbey. The contemporary art museum features work commissioned by the Abbey (all Austrian artists) since the 90’s. The natural history museum is fascinating and indicates, as an extension of the library, that the Abbey is a place of learning. The Gothic and Fine Art museum is also quite something. There are also multimedia displays which are very well done, but in German, which is fine and to be expected. None the less, we watched them. Read moreOne of the great libraries in the world. Not just the old books but the incredible architecture and painting and secret doors and stairways! This is about three hours from either Vienna or Salzburg. There are tours but I find it better to go right before or right after a tour. You might get lucky like we did and have the place to ourselves! And the docent was awesome and gave us a private tour detailing all the amazing facts about the library. Books can even be reserved for private viewing if you have time and can apply. In the gift shop on the way out try some wine! Free tasting! We found the staff to be incredibly kind and generous with information. They seem to love the abbey and enjoy sharing it with those who are respectful and show appreciation. Elizabeth was especially kind to us and showed us the hidden doors in the library. We hope we will get to see her when she visits the USA!
There is wine tasting in the shop and it is quite good! I would recommend a bottle of the Gewürztraminer to those who enjoy a subtly...
