Unfriendly and sometimes combative staff.
if you are taking the 3.5h route, PLEASE TAKE APPROPRIATE GEAR. It can be really dangerous, with steep narrow passages high in the mountain, completely exposed to the mountain side, with a good amount of loose rocks. We were poorly instructed to climb it and had a traumatic experience. The views are way more impressive than in the shortest route, but it is better suited for more experienced hikers. This information would be helpful to be included at the bottom card, as the hut becomes a more touristy attraction.
If you are not thinking on staying at the hut, stop reading here. If you are, indulge me some deeply unsatisfied rambling. It may save you some money. A lot of it really…
At 17:55 PM we reached the cabin at 1C° temperatures expecting a warm bath and cozy reception/dinner. We got stern faces and 1 word answers. The guy doing the checkin barely looked in our eyes while giving the least amount of information possible.
We wanted a bath to relax before lunch, but we were informed we should not. We bought the stay with dinner included and dinner is served at 18PM. They let us know that if we showed up 18:10, they would not serve us anymore.
Not a warm reception, but a cozy lunch would still be very welcome…
Of course I don't hold this against the staff, but unfortunately our stay matched a school excursion with circa 30 loud teenagers. What I do hold against it is the lack of a proper table to accommodate our 3 person group, and the oiliest schnitzel and potatoes I ever tried to eat.
Taking a bath is also charged separately. 4 euros per 3 minutes. We wanted to buy a 15~20 min bath, but again the staff denied us. They gave us coins for 6min bath each. I gave my coins to my friends and had to lie so they would have a better experience after a long day (the idea of staying on this hut was mine, you see…)
Coffee goes from 6~8AM. At 7:45 they will start cleaning stuff so you can take a hint and leave. We grabbed our stuff and started to go.
While we waited outside, my sister was in the bathroom finishing her girl stuff for a nice bridge picture, when a GUY ENTERS THE FEMALE BATHROOM and starts rushing her out, for he wanted to clean it. I mean, cant you wait 4 euros bro?
She is in the spectrum and get nervous when rushed. In the rush she pressed a finger in the door. She left the cabin crying and with a bloodied finger. I had to go back to ask for someone to give us a band-aid. I dont think I should have had to ask, since there was a GUY with her in the woman's bathroom as it happened.
Finally, and to be fair, you can expect a beautiful view from the cabin and clean rooms and sheets. More often than not, you should be luckier than us and have a cozy table in their restaurant.
For that potential they get the 2 stars, but I could not recommend the stay based on my own experience. The 90 min route up and down, same day, is...
Read moreWe started our hike from Rifugio Passo di Vizze (Italy-Austria border) and it took us about 3 hours to reach Olpererhutte. 3 hours of non stop scenery overlooking the Schlegeisspeicher reservoir along the way in the Zillertal Alps. ||Our check-in process was smooth and the staff is good, to the point. Our dormitory beds were comfortable and had enough space to keep our belongings. The toilets were clean too. ||For lunch we had Coles law, Tiroler Gröstl, coke and a unique drink called Huttenspritz. It was amazing and refreshing. Our food tasted good. ||For dinner we were served with an excellent tasting veg soup, Penne white sauce Pasta and dessert. This was one of the most satisfying meals in the Alps. All this overlooking the Schlegeisspeicher reservoir accompanied with sunset...truly romantic I must say.||Breakfast was very basic but good enough to start your day. ||||I must point out a couple of issues though, there was a very bad drain smell around the restaurant, not sure if they live with that smell all day or something they are working on. The other, 'flies on the food'. During breakfast, flies were literally feasting on cheese, butter, and ham. I wish the staff did something about this, as this is very unhygienic.||Other than that, it was quite a memorable stay. ||||Tip:- The iconic bridge is very commercial and during the day time it's ridiculously busy as people come here just for that. Make it a point to stay in the hut to witness the true beauty of Olpererhütte Bridge. After 5.30 PM and before 9 AM, the bridge will be all yours. With most of the people gone around sunset, it's the perfect time to explore the iconic bridge, which is about a 3 minute walk...
