Enchanting castle ruins with a sunset to remember! The Mödling Castle, nestled amidst the lush Wienerwald hills, is a hidden treasure for history buffs and nature lovers alike. I arrived just in time for sunset, and the golden hues bathing the ancient stones created a scene straight out of a romantic poem.

Though largely in ruins, the castle carries a sense of timelessness, with its origins dating back to the 12th century. It’s said that Walther von der Vogelweide, the famed medieval minstrel, once graced this site with his presence, adding a lyrical charm to the already evocative setting. The hike up is short but rewarding, offering sweeping views of the town below and the distant Vienna Basin.

Lovely little ruin, some signage around explaining its history. It's free to enter. It can be hard to find as Maps doesn't place its entrance at the right location. There is a trail behind the Tabak Trafik stand, take this trail up and you will see signs for it. It takes only 10 minutes to reach the ruin and the views...

Wunderbar sanierte und äußerst gepflegte Ruine der ehemaligen Burg Mödling aus dem Jahre 1200, welche auf einem Hügel über der Stadt thront. Unter dem Habsburgern Im 14. Jh. wurden die Verteidigungseinrichtungen der Burg stark erweitert. Aber auch dadurch konnte nicht verhindert werden, dass die Türken im Jahre 1529 die Wehranlage zerstörten. Mitte des 16. Jh. wurde mit dem Wiederaufbau begonnen. Aber bereits 1556 vernichtete ein Großbrand die Dächer und die Einrichtung. Da die Burg mittlerweile ihre militärische Bedeutung verloren hatte, wurde sie nach dem Brand nicht wieder aufgebaut. Bereits 1587 wird sie als verödet bezeichnet und die Quadersteine der Mauern wurden verkauft. In den Jahren 1965 bis 1970 bemühte sich ein Verein die Baureste freizulegen und zu sichern. Eine endgültige Sanierung fand in den letzten Jahren durch den Eigentümer, die Stadtgemeinde Mödling statt, und heute präsentiert sich eine bestens instandgesetzte Ruine...
