Aggstein Castle — Attraction in Gemeinde Schönbühel-Aggsbach

No organization for buses! 15:00 there at Saturday. Cramming into the bus, bus driver lied that you cannot buy ticket at the top (which you totally could). Exchanging online ticket for a paper one (what's the point of buying it online then?!) with a longer queue for just that, than a smaller queue to buy a regular ticket. Waiting 1 more hour in the shuttle bus queue. Busses are coming down every 20-30 minutes, and people waiting at the beginning are NOT getting in, because the old busses have to wait until all 3-4 busses arrived and then they can drive up the castle. So what happens is the people at the front are in chaos running backwards. Missing 2 busses because of that and luckily, the next bus drove to us, not to the people waiting before us...

Everything was crammed at the top, hard to move around. Same story to go back - we just walked back 20-30 minutes instead of waiting in the queue.

We visited Aggstein during spring, summer and now late autumn when the Christmas market is starting here (mid November, because it's on a hill top which is too crowded during this season and there's not enough parking spots up there, so the organizer set a temporary parking place at the bottom of the hill) and you can go by bus or car when it's not the Christmas market. The place has to be visited during all season because it's a beautiful one. Late in the night, when the christmas market is set, the medieval vibe is really a thing. It has a charm that is worth visiting. Beautiful views. Though if you want to visit the Christmas market, I recommend not visiting during those late hours unless you really enjoy the crowds. And when buying the tickets, you buy the bus tickets with return, and we didn't use it because of the queue, so we ended up walking on the road, in darkness with flashlight and we still got to the bottom faster then having to wait...

Ein Blick in die Geschichte Die Geschichte von Aggstein beginnt um das Jahr 1100, als die mächtigen Kuenringer die Burg errichteten. Ihre Lage war strategisch genial: Von hier aus konnte man den Schiffsverkehr auf der Donau kontrollieren – und manchmal auch ausnutzen. Berühmt-berüchtigt wurde Aggstein im 15. Jahrhundert unter Jörg Scheck vom Wald, der als Raubritter Schrecken verbreitete. Die Legende erzählt, er habe Gefangene auf den Felsvorsprung des „Rosengärtleins“ geführt und sie dort in den Tod gestürzt. Ob Wahrheit oder Mythos – die Geschichte macht die Burg bis heute zu einem Ort voller Geheimnisse. Nach Zerstörungen durch kaiserliche Truppen und dem schleichenden Verfall ab dem 17. Jahrhundert blieb Aggstein lange eine Ruine. Heute ist sie restauriert und als Ausflugsziel eine perfekte Mischung aus Historie und Abenteuer.
