Great historic place! Since it's a very short walk from the road, it's a good idea to combine the visit with Königswarte observation tower, accessible from Berg village on the other side of the hill. It only takes 15 min to walk down from the tower on a cool forest trail.
Pottenburg Castle, also known as Hasenburg or Mädchenburg (Maiden Castle), is a ruined medieval border fortress in Lower Austria, near the village of Berg. Situated on a spur of the Little Carpathians on Hindlerberg Hill, close to the Austrian-Slovak border, it once overlooked the vanished settlement of Amberg. The earliest fortifications may date to 990–1025, during Hungarian invasions, with the first documented mention in 1256. Initially owned by Count Poto. In 1482, Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus captured Pottenburg, using it as a frontier stronghold against Austria until 1492. In 1529, during the first Ottoman siege of Vienna, Suleiman I’s army swept through the region, devastating borderlands. Pottenburg fell almost without resistance and was destroyed by the Turks. Nearby Hainburg an der Donau, a key Habsburg outpost 10 km away, was also captured, looted, and partially ruined in 1529. But Pottenburg was never rebuilt and remained in ruins.
Today, the ruins include remnants of a 26.5-meter, 13th-century tower, a Gothic portal, and parts of a residential building with a well courtyard. Unrestored but...
Read moreVery easy tour that takes very little time and effort. Very easy for kids too! You can park down besides the ruin of some biogas facility. There you have multiple options of very easy walk, for the kids the most "adventurous" would be the left one over the fence on the ladder, thats pretty cool, and there are some nice views of Bratislava from there. The ruin is nice and very OLD, it has very nice tower that is visible from the road of the border-crossing Berg/Bratislava. If Austrians took better care of it and cleaned up the courtyard of the castle and possibly added some poster with the info about the castle it...
Hoci troška zručnejší človek by nemal problém sa do otvoru dostať, my sme to neskúšali.
