Visited this year - 17th July 2023 - Stunning lake in a very atmospheric location. It really is stunningly beautiful. I was in awe. The car drive as you approach is very scenic and the mountains are very picturesque. The car park must be one of the most beautiful car parks in the world because where else would you find such incredible scenery! Best of all the car park is free. Walk to the lake, look out points to access the lake along the way is about a 10-15 min walk. Wear trainers or something sturdy before going into the lake as it is very gravelly. Once by the lake, the views are to die for. It felt out of this world, like I was in Canada. Such a beautiful, unspoilt location. Advisable to wear water shoes for inside the lake as it can hurt your feet from the stones if you go barefeet. Breath-taking place. Definitely worth a visit.

I really enjoyed the ride, even if I didn't complete it all the way. The water was very very cold but refreshing. The views are extremely beautiful and the feeling afterwards is wonderful. Well worth visiting with the right hiking gear. The people are very friendly and polite. After the hike you can enjoy a cold beer or a hot chocolate, depending on the season :)

Grünau im Almtal hatte meinen Großvater schon vor 41 Jahren fasziniert, da war ich als 5 jähriger zum 1. Mal hier. Auch nach über 40 Jahren hat dieses wunderschöne Naturjuwel nichts von seinem Charme eingebüßt! Wir waren nun innerhalb von 4 Tagen 3 Mal hier und das bei jedem Wetter. Die Eindrücke mit Wolken, nebenverhangenen Bergen und Sonnenschein könnten nicht unterschiedlicher sein, haben uns aber immer aufs Neue bezaubert. Der Rundweg um den Almsee ist großteils flach und auch mit Kinderwagen gut zu bewältigen, mit knapp 5 km Länge sollte er auch keine allzugroße Herausforderung darstellen. Es gibt besonders am Uferweg im Wald viele Bankerl und Sitzgelegenheiten mit immer wieder wunderschönen, abwechslungsreichen Blickwinkeln auf glasklaren Wasser, eine erstaunliche, Flora und Fauna, Fisch, Wasservögel und Pflanzenwelt mit beeindruckendem Bergpanorama und beschauliicher pitoresker Naturkulisse - PRÄDIKAT ABSOLUT SEHENS- und ERLEBENSWERT

Eine Wanderung wie aus dem Bilderbuch haben wir heute gemacht. Einmal komplett um den Almsee und auf den daneben liegenden Ameisstein bei Grünau im Almtal. Knapp 13km, bei denen eine Ecke schöner war als die andere. Der Bergwanderweg zum Ameisstein wird nicht betreut und ist nicht markiert, das war auch deutlich zu spüren im letzten Drittel der Besteigung. Hier ist bei teilweise sehr steil abfallendem Gelände momentan zumindest kein Weg mehr zu erkennen. Irgendwie gings dann aber doch Kreuz und quer hoch. Die Belohnung: eine sagenhafte Aussicht auf den grün schimmernden Almsee und das Tote Gebirge sowie die Almtaler Sonnenuhr (das sind etliche Kogel, die sich hier aneinanderreihen). Nach Einkehr beim Imbiss nahe des Seehauses ging es zur letzten Etappe. Traumhaft schön war dieser letzte Abschnitt am Ufer des Almsees entlang, er führt immer sehr nahe am kristallklaren Wasser entlang mit unzähligen Bänken, wo man Rast machen und den herrlichen Blick auf den See und den vorher erklommenen Ameisstein genießen kann.
