We have driven past Mauterndorf many times but only realised we could visit the Burg this year. The castle is easily recognisable, with convenient (free) parking. We booked tickets online before arriving but as we visited 'off peak' on a Sunday, there was no queue at the Kassa anyway. All guests receive an audio handset for an informative guide, complete with sound effects. If you are not a German speaker, it is worth asking to see if the language can be changed by the Kassa. The castle has been renovated over the years, so double glazing and keeps any chilly wind out but there are some steep, wooden and at times bouncy stairs to climb up to the top where you will get a good view of the valley. It is not a large castle so it doesn't take too long to get around and there is a short Rundweg complete with a very modern, steel retractable drawbridge. Apparently this is activated sometimes during the main season but not when we were there. My husband and I both like old castles and definitely felt this was worth the trip - we were staying about an hour away...
