Russian Orthodox Church — Attraction in Baku City

The Cathedral of the Holy Wives-Myrrh-Bearers in Baku was built in 1909 according to the project of the Russian architect Fedor Mikhailovich Verzhbitsky. Funds for this project were allocated by the Military Ministry of Tsarist Russia, as well as a private donation made by Baku merchant Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev. The name of the cathedral has its own history. The cathedral was consecrated in honor of the women who, on the first day after Saturday, came to the Tomb of the resurrected Jesus Christ for ritual smearing of the body with incense and peace. Церковь была построена по типовому проекту военных храмов, утверждённому Строительной комиссией в 1901 году (арх. Фёдор Михайлович Вержбицкий). Всего в Российской Империи к 1917 году было выстроено не менее 64-х таких церквей. Данный храм для 206-го пехотного Сальянского полка (до 1910 года именовавшегося 262-м пехотным), расквартированного в Баку, был заложен 6 Мая 1908 года, выстроен целиком на средства Военного министерства, и торжественно освящён 6 декабря 1909 года.
