Descriptions Zoo - Executive Body: Executive committee consists of 30 members, of which 10 are local elite and renowned businessmen, while the rest members are from higher govt. officials and private entrepreneurs. Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong holds the presidency by dint of designation.
Geographical location: It is located at the heart of most beautiful areas of Chittagong with great beauty overlooking magnificent views of coastal scenery, uplands, lochs and mountains.
Area: Initially 4.90 acres of land was allocated by the Government, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh, which afterwards increased to 6 acres. The zoo authority is trying to increase the same. This area is hilly and very gently sloping.

Read moreChattogram zoo was built in 1989. With an area of 6 acres of land it is located about three kilometers north-east of the city, alongside at the entrance of Foy's lake. The zoo started with 16 animals of 4 different species of with 16 species of four species. Initially there was 4 different species e.g. monkey, lion, deer and Hanuman and total number of animals was 16.
At present, there are more than 300 species of animals in this zoo. Among them 30 are mammals, 38 are birds, and rest of 4 are reptiles. Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian lion, Asian black bear, African zebra, barking deer, spotted deer, sambar deer, hog deer, capped langur, gibbon, rhesus monkey, pig-tailed monkey, fishing cat, jungle cat, leopard cat, gandhagokul (Himalayan), large Indian civet cat, gayal, rabbit, porcupine, fox etc belong to the mammal class. Among the different species of birds at Chattogram zoo, there are guinea fowl, peacock, great hornbill, pied hornbill, vulture, lesser adjutant stork (madantak), white egret, night heron, spotted dove, black kite, cuckoo, myna, wagtail (khanjon) bird, turkey chicken etc. The authorities of Chittagong Zoo have decided to construct a new aviary to provide visitors with the opportunity to gaze upon different species of birds. Recently, a mini aviary was constructed for the visitors of Chattogram Zoo at a cost of Tk 34 lakh. The 60ft long and 25ft wide aviary has got 342 foreign birds of 6 species. These include lovebirds, laughing dove, pheasant pigeon, ringneck parrot, cockatiel and Macaw. Reptiles in zoos are pythons, freshwater crocodiles, turtles etc. There are plans to bring kangaroo and ostrich in the zoo in future.
