Command Bunker Kemmel — Attraction in Heuvelland

I loved the visit! People at the front desk were super kind, and the place is just... different. This is not a super duper well kept museum with lots of entertainments, it is a more like the real deal, as in "come and see things as they were back then". There a few videos and nice displays and explanations, but what struck me was the atmosphere of the place: secrecy and work in a suffocating place, detached from the outside world....

Een ongelooflijk indrukwekkend en uniek stukje geschiedenis!

Een bezoek aan de Commandobunker op de Kemmelberg is een reis terug in de tijd naar het hart van de Koude Oorlog. Dit gigantische, topsecret complex, diep weggestopt onder de grond, is adembenemend en heeft altijd al iets mysterieus gehad.

Het is bizar om een enorm militair commandocentrum verborgen te zien onder een onopvallend huisje in het bos. Binnen is de tijd volledig stil blijven staan: van bakelieten telefoons en oude switchboards tot de indrukwekkende operation room – de technologie was voor die tijd hoogstaand.

Voor mij persoonlijk, als ex-nachtwaker hier tijdens de woelige jaren '84 en ’85, was het een emotioneel bezoek. Het bracht herinneringen boven aan een tijd van constante alertheid, midden in de bloedigste jaren van de na-oorlogse Belgische geschiedenis. Het is fantastisch om nu, 40 jaar later, dit stukje erfgoed te kunnen delen en te zien hoe men onder de grond klaarstond om ons te beschermen.
