Beautiful area! We did the Tiger Fern trail. Fair warning... The trail starts flat and then gets steeper and steeper and steeper. It's like stair climbing without the stairs. There are benches every 10mins to rest at. If it has rained or is raining, the trail will be slick and muddy. There was zero breeze for us and I was glad I was wearing moisture wicking clothing...though I was drenched not even 1/4 into the hike.
Just when you think you may be done--that the waterfall just has to be nearby... Instead you reach the top thay overlooks the park and come to a Y. To the left is the campsite and lookout. To the right, the trail continues DOWN to the waterfall and that's steeper than what you just climbed up. And you'll have to go back UP that to get out. So wear good hiking shoes.
We didn't see many people but the ones we saw who were wearing regular tennis shoes with zero grip fell every time at some point.
Pack lots of water and take food to just enjoy the two waterfalls. We were glad we did because it made the hike to it that much more worth it. We had the waterfall to ourselves most of the 1.5hrs we stayed and swam and had lunch.
Afterwards we did the river tubing. 15 bzd per person. They hand you a life vest and an inner tube and off you go down a very short trail. This was so much fun. No tour guide. No tour group. Just our family floating down a river for 30+ mins. Worth every penny because the river is beautiful.
We then stopped at the mayan shop for chocolates. Just skip it. It is...
Read moreWe did cockscomb river tubing and Bens Bluff waterfall. It was with a Mexican family of 4 living in California. We checked in at the visitors center, bought our tickets and we were on our way! The tubing was intermediate to advanced tubing due to the raising water level of the river. It was a 20 minute hike whereby we tubed down with rapid currents down stream. There’s a marker at the edge of the river to indicate current strengths. After exiting the tubing we had lunch at the picnic area located by visitors center. After having lunch we waited 15 minutes then proceeded to start another hike 35 minutes to Bens bluff waterfall. The hiking was very much worth it all. In the end we had so much fun sharing history, culture traditions and jokes. Unforgettable experience for sure! My apologies for not taking...
Read moreThe Nature Reserve gives you a change to see wildcats in the wild. You can make nice walks to some waterfalls where you can swim. When early you might see the tracks of a jaguar or Puma.
We stayed a night in a six person dorm at the park head quarters. But because we where the only ones it was nice and very quiet. The fire flies gave us a show. Must do is a lazy and silent flow over the river in a tube (provided at the head quarters) with sunset. Best change to see a wildcat.
There is a kitchen and stove so you can cook your own food. Don’t forget to bring everything you need including food and insect repellent. The sandflies and misquotes are horrible.
We took a taxi in for 40 Belizian dollar one way. To be arranged at the shop in Maya Center Village down the road. Otherwise it’s a 10 km...
