My son and I stayed with Gregory and the Chun family at Maya Centre for two nights. We arrived from Belize City on the Floralia bus which dropped us off at the door. (I believe most of the other bus companies will also get you there.) The accommodations were rustic & simple and very clean. The bed was comfortable and although it was quite hot and humid at the base of the Cockscomb, we slept comfortably thanks to a large fan. Gregory was a great communicator, super easy going and very easy to reach. We felt really safe and comfortable. We absolutely loved all of the traditional meals that were prepared for us. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. One night we were fortunate enough to share a meal with Greg who told us about his incredibly unique life story of growing up in the jungle and finding his way in the modern society from the time he was a teenager. We absolutely loved touring their spice farm and tasting star fruit and oranges that were in season. A must-see for all people interested in permaculture. Be sure to take some time to visit the butterfly farm, enjoy delicious cacao, walk along the jungle path and around this small village. We were stunned to spot a black jaguar on our walk! A magical and rare event! As an experienced tour guide, Greg also offers tours of all kinds to visit the Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve and other sites as well. A piece of our heart will remain here in Maya Center! A must for anyone who likes to travel off the...
Read moreStaying here and walking in Cockscomb Basin with Gregorio and Oscal was a highlight of our trip to Belize. We stayed in the family room, which was ideal for our family of four. It is clean and comfortable has what you need. As others have noted, the shower does not have hot water but that was just fine in the hot climate. Gregorio and his family were very welcoming and their food was delicious, with generous portions. It was a privilege to spend time with Gregorio and Oscal in the area where they grew up before the jaguar sanctuary was established and to learn a little about the challenges they have overcome. Both are excellent nature guides, able to spot, identify, and call in birds and mammals and full of information about the many plants and trees of the area and how they are traditionally used by the Maya. We did a night walk and a day of hiking with a waterfall swim. Both were excellent. We heard a jaguar and saw some small mammals and a snake on the night walk and saw many birds on the day walk. Don't expect a resort, but do expect a very enjoyable stay with friendly and knowledgeable people and a chance to experience some...
Read moreIf you want an authentic Mayan experience and see the real Belize, I highly recommend Tutzil Nah Cottages. It is owned and operated by three Mayan brothers who also lead awesome guided trips in the nearby wildlife reserves (see separate review under Tutzil Nah Tours). I would describe it as a home-stay where the brothers live with their families, rent out a few rooms, and provide meals. The accommodations are rustic and simple but clean and comfortable. There is no air conditioning; however the big fan provided was adequate. Also there is only cold water for showers but the weather is warm enough that it was not an issue. They were very welcoming and shared stories of their Mayan history and culture. Gregorio’s wife prepared authentic Mayan meals and vegetarian options were available. There is a Mayan chocolate shop right up the road and a very interesting butterfly farm with beautiful gardens to visit. I highly recommend you stay at Tutzil Nah Cottages, enjoy their meals, and take their tours for an experience...
