Incredible castle. Open 24 hours. Have the castle all to yourself and be the king 🤴 This is better than Blagaj Tekke because there are absolutely no tourists, only a few licals hike this mountain to get to this fantadtic abandoned castle/fortress.
According to my Garmin watch from the bus stop (226 feet or 69 meters of height elevation) to the flag pole on top of the castle (905 feet or 276 meters of height elevation), hiking ascend is 679 feet or 207 meters in total. The distance is 1.38 miles or 2.22 kilometers. It should take you about 40 minutes or 1 hour with videos and photos on the way up. Please bring lots of water during the summer because there is not much of shades up here. Wear a hat and sunblocks are very highly advised !!!!
Blagaj Fortress or Old Town of Blagaj (Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian: Stari grad Blagaj, Serbian Cyrillic: Стари Град Благај; pronounced [blaːgaj]), locally known as Stjepan-grad (Стјепан-град), or Stipan-grad, in classical times Bona (Бона), is a town-fortress complex near the town of Blagaj, Bosnia and Herzegovina. You have to look up info on the place as there is nothing written at the fortress. It's just abandoned.
The government or historical department, or the department of Tourism have done nothing to the site, even the national flag on the pole there is in tatters.
However on the plus side, as it's not advertised, although there were 10 coaches of tourists to see the Dervish Monastery there were none to see the fortress. 1 other person was there.
There is a good path up to the fortress from the parking area, takes 15 max 20 mins to walk up, there are some big walls still standing, 2 cisterns for water and great views from the walls.
It's free to get in, there is just a stone entrance, in you go.
Enjoy, but as said use Wikipedia before you go to have an understanding...
Read moreThis place is a hidden gem that deserves all the praise and more recognition. First off, the location is like something out of a dream: An ancient fortress nestled against a towering cliff, overlooking a crystal-clear river and a vast valley below. Getting here is a bit of a hike and the pathway is not great but the views alone are worth the trip. The panoramic vistas are simply breathtaking.
This fortress has been standing strong since the 9th century, and you can sense the stories and legends that surround it. It's a remarkable edifice with a rich history. Unfortunately, there are no signs or explanations of the architecture or history, so you should do a bit of research in advance or bring a local guide to fully appreciate it. There are no tickets and the site is open to...
