Matadeiro Beach — Attraction in Região Geográfica Imediata de Florianópolis

The history of Matadeiro beach is connected with whale fishing activities dominating the area in XIX century. Hunting boats marina was located on Armação Beach (located to the left) and the final point where whales were killed and processed situated on Matadeiro. The parts of whales' bodies were taken back to Armação where the oil was extracted. Today nothing reminds of those old days.

The beach is very popular for surfing. The best places are located in the left corner of the beach and the right part is more popular for bathing.

There is no direct access to this beach from Armação beach -- you either need to cross the river which divides the two beaches or walk on the bridge located on the Luiz Gonzaga dos Santos street. There is a narrow concrete pathway which goes over the rough coastline with the beautiful view to the area.

The beach has 800 meters long with the small grotto at the beginning. A trail begins in the right corner and connects Matadeiro and Lagoinha do L'Este beaches so if you like to walk long distances on a seashore you'd definitely...

A aproximadamente 25 km do centro de Florianópolis, a Praia do Matadeiro está localizada na região sul da ilha, entre as praias da Armação e Lagoinha do Leste. Com águas frias e ondas bem formadas, o local atrai tanto banhistas quanto surfistas em busca de boas condições para a prática do esporte.

A praia é separada da Armação por um pequeno rio, cuja profundidade e coloração variam conforme a maré. Em determinados momentos, sua água se torna cristalina devido à entrada do mar; em outros, adquire um tom avermelhado quando a maré baixa faz com que a água do rio escoe para o oceano. Essa coloração é resultado do depósito de matéria orgânica presente no leito do rio.

O nome "Matadeiro" remonta ao período em que a região era utilizada para a caça de baleias. Durante essa época, quando a prática ainda era permitida, os animais eram conduzidos até a praia e abatidos no local.

Atualmente, o cenário é completamente diferente: Matadeiro é um refúgio de tranquilidade, acessível apenas por uma caminhada de cerca de 300 metros por uma trilha que parte da Praia da Armação. A ausência de carros e a beleza natural tornam o local ainda mais especial.
