A trip to Dragalevski monastery from Sofia makes for a great afternoon on a hot day.

Getting there: Dragalevski monastery is easily accessible from Sofia by public transportation. Take Metro line 2, the blue line, to the Vitosha Metro station which is the last stop. Then get on bus 66 in the direction of Hotel Moreni. The bus 66 bus stop is right outside of the metro station, next to the mall. The monastery is the second to last stop but the bus only stops when requested. Get a window seat. The bus ride itself is scenic. The monastery is just a couple of minutes walk from the bus stop.

To do: Visiting the monastery won't take much time but there are benches and areas to rest in the cool mountain on hot day. Around the corner from the monastery is an area with picnic benches and a food truck where you can order delicious inexpensive grilled meats, salads, and beer.

A visit to the monastery from the city and a short rest there can be done in a matter of hours, less...

Dragalevtsi Monastery of the Holy Mother of God of Vitosha (Bulgarian: Драгалевски манастир „Света Богородица Витошка“, Dragalevski manastir „Sveta Bogoroditsa Vitoshka“) is a Bulgarian Orthodox monastery on the lower slopes of Vitosha mountain on the outskirts of the capital Sofia in western Bulgaria. The monastery was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest of Sofia and reestablished in the late 15th century, when it became an important literary centre. The monastery church and some of its frescoes date from...

Hidden in the mountains, right under your nose, the monastery exists next to the urban development. Its buildings stand tall and proud, yet unseen from the main road to Aleko Hut. Even in winter, the yard, church and living quarters hold their majestic stanza. You can feel the past in the church curves, in the water dripping thru the ice - just as it did for centuries.

Rather disappointing monastery. While it has some historical significance, it offers nothing to visitors, not even signs explaining its history. The surrounding area is poorly maintained, with litter scattered around, and the road leading to it is in terrible condition (typically Bulgarian). Unless you are religious, you’ll probably find the visit a waste of time.
