An incredible place. Probably my favourite in Bulgaria. A strip of beautiful beach with river on one side and sea on the other. The sea water is crystal clear and great for swimming and snorkeling. There is a shack on the beach with rents kayaks and windsurfing boards and has a catamaran which they take you out for rides on. You can travel right up the river on kayaks or go out on the sea. There are also a couple of places to get drinks and food. Despite the activity it's still a pretty natural beach without too much commercialisation

Beautiful beach. I think I saw theree bar-like places, well maintained toiletes a medical centre and lifeguard. The sand is a bit big grained, that gives a different feel when walking on the beach. If you are not a fan of sitting still at the beach - there are places of nature to explore around that are worth your while. I saw a lot of people kayaking on the river side of the beach, too.

The north beach of Sinemorets. Sinemorets is one of the most beautiful and clean places on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The Veleka River is flowing into the Black Sea, making the beach incredibly beautiful and inspiring. The whole area is a reserve and there are some rare species of plants and animals. The river offers the possibility of boat riding on warm summer days.

Location: 700 m northwest of Sinemorets village, 3.5 km south of Ahtopol Elevation: 0 - 15 meters Area: 15.11 square kilometers

Veleka is a picturesque river, that springs from the Turkish part of the Strandzha Mountains. It flows into the Black Sea near Sinemorets. The total length of the river is 145 kilometers and 125 of them are in Bulgarian territory. Veleka flows through the heart of "Strandzha" nature park, "Uzunbudzhak" and "Silkosiya" reserves and the "Veleka River Mouth" ("Ustieto na reka Veleka") protected area. It is home to hundreds of endangered animal and plant species. There are more than 550 plant species, nearly 20 amphibian, more than 30 fish and 40 mammal at the mouth of the river. One of the most valuable plants in the Veleka river is the yellow water lily - a rare species listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria. The spring snowflake is another typical representative of the local flora. Eel, wild carp and Caspian marsh turtle are among the protected animal species.

The river estuary forms a sandspit which separates Veleka from the sea. Due to the unique landscapes and rich flora and fauna, the mouth of Veleka is among the most interesting and beautiful protected areas in southeastern Bulgaria. From "Tsarsko kladenche" area in the Strandzha Mountains to its flowing into the sea, the river is navigable with a slow drift. In some places it is 8 meters deep. The route for sailing with a boat is about 7 km long. There are excellent conditions for kayaking. Boat trips are organized for tourists, starting from a small pier under the bridge on the road Ahtopol - Sinemorets. The place can be reached by a dirt road to the right immediately after the bridge (towards Sinemorets village). River cruise organizers have placed information boards with telephone numbers for everyone who wants to see the beauty of Veleka...

Beautiful and wild, and right off the beaten track. The river estuary terminates at a sand bar, against the black sea. Great place for sunbathing away from people and away from the noise. Quite, and peaceful.

There is a track to parking from the road, but this is not paved, and could prove difficult to navigate in some conditions. We parked next to the cemetery at the top of the hill, and walked down.

Bring food and drink with you, or buy from the (good but expensive) kiosk. They have excellent chips (but only acknowledge them - completely incorrectly - as being 'french fries').

Next time we will spend more time here, and really hope that...
