Musée De Foumban — Attraction in Foumban

Foumban was the historic capital of the Bamum kingdom; a palace there dates from the 18th century. Njoya (reigned 1890–1923), the best known of the Bamum kings, established schools, invented a system of pictographic writing, and patronized the arts. The palace now houses the Foumban Museum of Bamum Art, containing examples of wood carving, realistic masks in copper and terra-cotta, and collections of weaponry and bamboo and raffia furniture.

Local handicrafts are sold in Foumban, which is the most important centre for artisans in northwestern Cameroon. Prix du billet prohibitif (12k pour les "blancs" dès 5 ans, qu'on soit touristes ou résidents. Prix non affichés, on découvre cela uniquement à la guérite) pour un musée dont on fait le tour en une heure (avec le guide) ! L'intérêt principal réside dans l'architecture extérieure du bâtiment. La collection intérieure est de qualité mais aucune explication écrite au premier niveau puis très sommaire dans le reste du musée. Le guide saute un tiers des œuvres présentées et est dur à comprendre, en particulier si vous n'habitez pas le pays. Photos strictement interdites (on vous confisque les téléphones et appareils photos à l'entrée). Extérieurs pas entetenus (la ville est très poussiéreuse en cette saison, et personne ne jugerait utile de passer un coup de balai sur les 3 bancs extérieurs par exemple).
