During our visit to Banff last summer, we also took the opportunity to explore the fascinating Cosmic Ray Station on the summit of Sulphur Mountain. This historic site, which dates back to the 1950s, is not only a unique piece of Canadian history but also an interesting stop for anyone curious about science and the history of space exploration.
The Cosmic Ray Station, now part of the Sulphur Mountain summit experience, originally served as a research facility to study cosmic rays, high-energy particles that come from space. The station’s weathered building still stands as a testament to the groundbreaking research that took place there. It’s located right at the top of the mountain, offering stunning views of the surrounding area. The building itself is small but fascinating, and there are several informational signs that explain its purpose and the science behind the research that took place there.
Walking around the area, you can really appreciate the historical significance of the station while also soaking in the spectacular views that stretch for miles. The juxtaposition of the scientific history with the natural beauty of the surroundings creates a surreal experience.
Visiting the Cosmic Ray Station was a highlight of our trip—it was a cool, educational detour while enjoying the great outdoors. If you find yourself on Sulphur Mountain, it’s definitely worth the short walk to this historic site. It's a perfect blend of history, science, and nature, all in one...

The location was well-maintained, with designated viewing areas that allowed visitors to fully appreciate the natural beauty surrounding them. The pathways and facilities were clean and well-kept, enhancing the overall enjoyment of the visit.
One of the highlights was watching the sunset from this vantage point—it was truly mesmerizing. The colors painted across the sky as the sun dipped below the horizon created a picturesque scene that will stay with me for a long time.
Additionally, the staff on-site were friendly and knowledgeable, providing insights into the area's geography and wildlife.

Read moreThe only Gondola ride in Banff brings you to the top of Sulfur Mountain where there is fine dining at night or a casual buffet for lunch. If you are a fan of hiking, you can actually hike it as well. However, during the winter months several of the path to the top of the summit are covered in very deep snow. Also note, that the elevation from the bottom to the top of the mountain changes from about 4500 feet to 7900. Then you can walk on the boardwalk to get to an old research facility where scientist measured the amount of radiation from solar flairs. From here you can see the town of banff and bow valley but I suggest going when the fog had burnt off because visibility is limited otherwise. We went in the winter time and it was snowing that day so we did not get to see much. It was worth the trip as there is a lot to do once you are there. Tip: If you don't want to have lunch in the restaurant, pack a lunch and go to the observation deck.....forth floor. You can picnic outside or there is a seating area...
