I've been lucky to have been coming here for 33 years. Amazing fishing and a great lake to explore. Lots of cool destinations that you can reach by boat. Head west to Bewdley or trek up the Ottonabe River to Peterborough for lunch. Go west through Hastings and trek to Lake Ontario.
Historically this lake is extremely rich with early human activity. For thousands of years it was a crucial part of the Trent-Severn Waterway that early humans used to travel via canoe from lake Huron to lake Ontario. Artifacts found all over the surrounding area are as old as 11,000 years before present time. They've even found preserved caribou bones in a bewdley swamp.
Rice Lake also has the only known example of a serpent shaped burial mound amongst 8 other mounds that were constructed over a 350 year period roughly two thousand years ago.
I only found out about the incredible history of this lake this year and am so grateful to have been able to share the same land that mankind has for millenia.
Lots to do here and the lake is 33km long. Watch out for markers that guide you over the sunken railroad tracks so you don't wreck your prop.
DO NOT GO OUT WHEN IT'S ROUGH IF YOU'RE A NOVICE ON THE WATER!!
This lake seems to claim a soul every year so please don't go out in a small vessel when it's...
Read moreVery beautiful lake near to Toronto which is just within 100 kms. All three stars for the beauty of the lake and gone stars for the unnecessary behaviour by the local people. Best view in winter as the lake freezes and gives a magnificent view overlooking blue mountains. We can enjoy the route to Rice lake too. One bad experience to us was Google routed us to Hiawatha Indigenous peoples conservative area and we got shouted by the people and a lady at the Old Railroad Stop Restaurant and Gas Bar and was threatened by them that they were going to call cops on us. All this was just we parked in their gas station and going to see the beautiful lake. I don’t see any reason in stopping and shouting on people enjoying nature without interfering their natural habitat. So, please be careful while visiting this lake and avoid that particular point where Google guides you to the gas station called Old Railroad Stop Restaurant and Gas Bar. We went in December and might be because lot of parks and trails closed around Rice lake at that time we ended up in a wrong place...
Read moreBeautiful lake but the fishing is tough . Too many ppl dock fishing and keeping every little thing they catch. Killing the fishing in the lake. Doubtful there even licensed. They need restrictions enforced on this lake to preserve the fishery. Put a limit on panfish amount and minimum size. Enforce it before the lake is completely dead. More Game wardens needed to stop the hoarding of fish and out of season fisherman taking every species even before its open. Then they'll complain the fishing isnt good. Be selective folks. Stop killing the lake....
