I don't have the words to describe the enormous volume and force of the water cascading over these falls. What they lack in height, they more than make up for that with sheer power and ferocity! The viewing area is literally right beside the raging torrent, it's almost overwhelming to ears, eyes and mind. To reach the falls from the parking area is an easy 10 minute walk across mostly level terrain. Near the start, you'll view a one lane bridge crossing the river with rapids on both sides of it. This is the "Mushbowl" and when you drive on towards Helmcken falls, you'll cross this bridge. Continue on, a very pretty walk and soon you'll have a full view of the falls spreading wide across the Murtle river. Carry on from here another few minutes to get up close and personal with Dawson Falls, it's simply amazing, especially in...

Right now most of it is covered in snow and ice with only a few spots where you can see the torrent of water pouring beneath. Some beautiful ice formations.
The winter path is very snowy in February, but it's still clear and very compact — just don't step off it unless you want to be up to your thighs in snow. The trail down to the lower level is do-able, but only for those with good footwear, balance, and the ability to take a...
Read moreFollowing a 10-minute hike through an old growth forest, you can spot and admire the impressive Dawson Falls. At Dawson Falls, the Murtle River drops over lava flows that date to about 200,000 years ago. Unlike the other waterfalls in Wells Gray Provincial Park, this waterfall is not particularly high (16 meters), but relatively wide (90 meters), which is why it is sometimes called the "Little Niagara Falls". The marked hiking trail takes you quite close to the waterfall and you can also experience the spray. However, you should apply mosquito spray, as there are a lot of mosquitoes in the forest (especially in summer!). Dawson Falls are approximately 41 kilometers north...
