Bay Roberts sits on the coast of one of the fingers of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula, on the west side of Conception Bay, just across the water from the city of St John’s. Its coastal location and proximity to the city makes it a popular spot for visitors looking to drink in the wonder of Canada’s farthest east coast. The Shoreline Heritage Trail will offer some challenges to amateur walkers, but its craggy landscape is worth the effort. Considered an “easy-to-moderate” hike, the Shoreline Heritage Trail is a five-mile (8km) loop that takes explorers along beaches, sheer cliffs and brilliant green terrain. One of the highlights is Madrock, an outcrop that sees the full fury of the Atlantic Ocean. You can pack a picnic to enjoy at the Three Sisters pebble beach to extend the duration of your walk, which takes about two hours without stops.

Wow awesome hike. I'd say easy for anyone with hiking experience, moderate for those inexperienced. We walked the entire thing in 2.5 hours but we stop a lot for photos and to just take in the views. The eastern and northern portions have stunning views and are actual hiking paths. The western portion is on road and can be missed, except for the bit towards the top end where the "Three Sisters" rock formation and beach are (nice metal staircase leading down). The entire beach is full of perfect skipping stones - bring the kids! So impressed, Bay Roberts has done a great job on trail maintenance and signage - there are even a few simple Toilets. There are tons of blueberries to pick along the way when in season. As usual obey instructions regarding cliffs and private property. There is parking at several access points, check the trail map.

The MadRock Hiking Trail in Bay Roberts is an absolutely stunning trail that offers breathtaking coastal views and a serene connection with nature. The trail is well-marked, and the scenery is spectacular, especially at Jugglers Cove. The dramatic cliffs and rugged landscape provide a great experience for outdoor enthusiasts. However, it's important to note that some spots along the trail have dangerous cliff drop-offs, especially when the ground is muddy or wet. It's crucial to be cautious and watch your footing in these areas. Despite the potential hazards, the trail is worth every step for the views alone. This trail is a must-do if you're in the area, but be sure to wear proper hiking boots and keep safety in mind while exploring.
