The Sunken Garden in Victoria's Butchart Gardens is a botanical masterpiece. This meticulously designed garden takes you on a journey through a breathtaking transformation of an abandoned quarry into a lush paradise.

In spring, the garden bursts to life with a kaleidoscope of flowers, from tulips and daffodils to vibrant rhododendrons. During the summer, it's a riot of color with cascading fuchsias, dahlias, and fragrant roses. The attention to detail in the garden's layout and maintenance is evident in every corner.

The stone terraces and pathways add to the charm, providing various vantage points to admire the beauty. It's not just a garden; it's a work of art that showcases nature's splendor. A visit to the Sunken Garden is a must for anyone seeking tranquility and an appreciation for...

Butchart Gardens Sunken Garden The Sunken Garden was created from an exhausted Vancouver Portland Cement Company limestone quarry which had been used as the source of limestone for manufacturing Portland cement. With a former limestone quarry for her backyard, Jennie Butchart envisioned landscaping a sunken garden in its place, transforming the property for her family—and visitors—for generations to come. As cement production exhausted the limestone deposits, Jennie envisioned a grand garden in its place and began transferring top soil by horse and cart. One of the most, if not the most, beautiful garden I’ve ever been too! Every square inch has been thoughtfully designed. The water features are beautiful too. I especially love all the hedges. Sunken garden is seriously so beautiful!!! (It used to be old stone quarry now turned into gorgeous garden) 😍

A must visit while...

Depending on your likes, this can either be your favourite section of the gardens or tied with the rose garden - both very well kept and maintained. The sunken garden is commenced by a set of staircases leading you down to the grounds of hundreds of flowers and shrubs - truly breathtaking from every angle.

My favorite area at Butchart. Great vision to transform a rock quarry to a beautiful and lush garden. Be sure to climb the steps to the top of the rock outcropping in the center of the garden for a nice view
