Matheson Lake: A Vancouver Island Gem for Nature Lovers Nestled just a short drive from Sooke, Matheson Lake Regional Park offers a fantastic escape into nature, boasting a beautiful lake, diverse trails, and a range of recreational activities. Whether you're looking for a refreshing swim, a scenic hike, or a peaceful day of fishing, Matheson Lake delivers a quintessential West Coast experience. Swimming & Relaxation: On a warm Vancouver Island day, Matheson Lake truly shines as a swimming destination. The sandy beach provides an ideal spot to spread out a towel and enjoy the sun, while the clear, refreshing water invites you for a dip. There's even a small island in the middle of the lake, Ian Gillespie Island, that adventurous swimmers can reach for a unique sunbathing spot. It's a popular choice for families and anyone seeking a cool respite from the summer heat. Hiking & Exploration: The park is a hiker's paradise, with several kilometers of well-maintained trails catering to various fitness levels. The Matheson Lake Loop is a popular 2.5-mile (4 km) circuit that takes you through a scenic forest, offering lovely views across the lake. While generally family-friendly, be aware that the terrain can be undulating, with some rocky and root-covered sections and a few steeper inclines. For those looking for a longer adventure, Matheson Lake is conveniently connected to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail, a 55-kilometer multi-use trail that stretches from Victoria to Sooke. This connection allows for extended cycling, walking, or even horseback riding excursions, linking to other regional parks like Roche Cove. Fishing Opportunities: Anglers will appreciate that Matheson Lake is stocked with catchable-sized rainbow trout, making it a good spot for a day of fishing. Smallmouth bass and coastal cutthroat trout are also found here. Electric motors are permitted on the lake, offering more flexibility for those seeking their catch. Amenities & Accessibility: Matheson Lake Regional Park features an information kiosk and restrooms at the main beach area. While parking can be limited, especially on peak days, arriving early can help secure a spot. The park is generally well-maintained, ensuring a pleasant visit. Overall Impression: Matheson Lake is a truly delightful regional park that offers a diverse range of activities within a stunning natural setting. Its combination of swimming, hiking, and fishing opportunities, coupled with its accessibility from Sooke and connection to the Galloping Goose, makes it a must-visit for anyone exploring Vancouver Island's West Coast. It's a perfect spot for a solo escape, a romantic outing, or a fun-filled family day.

Matheson lake is a 45 minute drive from Victoria center. It is absolutely beautiful place to enjoy the nature. There is a main 3.8 KM loop trail around the lake as well as many other trails in the area. I enjoy doing the loop trail combined with hiking to the top of Mount Matheson for a total of 6.5 KM. The main challenge is making that run without stopping for pictures as the scenery is simply amazing. Swimming here on a hot summer day is also so much fun and refreshing. There is a small turtle protected nesting area on the small island in the middle of the lake.

I grew up in Metchosin, so this lake will always be special to me. But if you're reading these reviews, you're probably looking for something worth wile to venture to from out of town. The lake is most beautiful when no one's at it, so hike/run around it in the spring and fall and jump in. In the summer it's over crowded and murky and often has pond lilies and weeds that tickle you. If you're out this far, definitely check out East Sooke Park. If I was from out of town I'd be more...
