I camped on the island for two nights and it was great.
The campsite is on a wooden deck so there is room for about two small tents. This is backcountry camping, so you will not find a electric outlet or water tap. You are not allowed open fires, so bring a cook stove. One luxury is access to very clean, not unpleasant-smelling outhouses near-by.
I had campsite #3 and while nice, it is too close to the trail and every day-hiker ends up talking to you...and there are a lot of day-hikers. I would book site #1, if I were to do this again.
The real magic of the place comes at the end of the day when everyone goes home and you (and the people of five other campsites) are left alone to explore the island on your own. It's terrific.
There are 3 small trails to explore, the Flowerpots, a cave and a lighthouse look-out. Sunset can be found at the end of the Marl Trail.
Look for plenty of wildlife. I saw a few snakes, a rabbit, an otter, and many red squirrels Birders will also be kept busy - my campsite was home to many including a hummingbird that dropped by occasionally.
To get to the island you will need to book with one of the two companies that service the island. They will also allow you to park at one of their parking lots, in town. Prior to checking in with them, you must pick up your camping pass from the Parks Canada Visitor Centre. All of these arrangements must be made in advance to avoid...
Read moreSo much fun! The beauty of the island is amazing. You take a boat to the island where you can first stop at shipwrecks and then head to the island. The island had such beautiful water views, where you can look at the birds. There were plenty of hiking trails, some where the trails were easier with a boardwalk type to others more tough. The island gets very busy with boats coming in about every hour. I saw many parents bring strollers and struggle right away as it’s too rocky so I wouldn’t recommend bringing a stroller. You should pack food, water and snacks as there are plenty of picnic tables you can sit and eat at. the washrooms are very dirty, the dirtiest I’ve ever seen in my life so I would recommend using the washroom prior to going to the Island. Once you enter the island there is plenty to see. First you will see the waterfront beach area followed by trails. You should check out the cave that is further down the trail, it’s so worth it. I would wear bug spray as the cave is damp and moist so the bugs were there. We went to the lighthouse I would venture there as it’s beautiful with another view of the water, tons of picnic tables and a beautiful relaxing scene. The boat ride was 45 mins there and 30 mins back. It definitely was a fun, active day trip with such pretty Carrie views. I really...
Read moreWe booked a cruise through Huron cruise company and dropped off at the Flower Island, we were able to see two sunken ships on our destination there, the ride time in my opinion is about 30 mins as we travelled using the Jet boat. The waters is prestine and you should walk with a light coat as it can get a bit nippy whilst travelling on the water. The scenery is beautiful and just lots of open water everywhere with scattered small islands jotting out. The Island itself has a beautiful boardwalk at the drop of point. Just follow the trails and there are several picnic tables everywhere on the island. The trails are open and cleared, we stopped off at the flower pots which are stone structured shaped like a flower standing alone from the years of erosion. These is some nice bathing spots on the island but the water is very cold, nice for sun bathing. There is one washroom only at the entrance at the docks, and you need to take your garbage off the island. the island is a really nice place to visit with family and friends, be careful whilst going down the side of the cliffs. The cost for two people return is about $75, you can spend about 2 to 4 hrs...
