Flower Pot Island is without a doubt one of the most beautiful attractions in the Bruce Peninsula-Tobermory area. You can take a coastal tour with no drop-off, or coastal tour with drop-off, by using one of two boating companies that service this area. In no particular order, they are: Bruce Anchor Cruise, and Blue Heron. If you’re looking to learn more information about the island, Bruce Anchor Cruise is likely your best bet. If you’re looking for a quieter scenic tour, Blue Heron May be your best bet. Helicopter tours that fly by Flower Pot Island are also available.
The island derives it’s name from one “big” and one “small”, free-standing, tower-like rock formations, commonly referred to as “flower pots”. Naturally, these two flower pots, alongside the stunningly beautiful cobalt blue and emerald green waters, are the main attractions on the island.
You can access each flower pot through nice and an easy 15 minute walk along a well-kept hiking trail. Several different lookout points offer different views of the flower pots, making the island a photographer’s paradise.
Other attractions on Flower Pot Island include a cave along the hiking trail that leads to the flower pots, as well a light keeper’s house partially converted into a light house (Bruce Anchor Cruise tends to go closer to shore to allow its passengers to have a closer look at the Light House). Small, harmless garter snakes, the rich variety of birds, chipmunks, and squirrels can also at times be an attraction on the island.
Activities on the island include hiking, swimming, snorkeling, diving, photography, and camping. There are also picnic tables under the shade for anyone looking to have a scenic picnic.
Flower Pot Island offers something beautiful for every weather conditions and time of the year. A foggy and rainy day cloaks the Flower Pot Island into a mystical island that reminds one of the movie King Kong. A bright sunny day offers breathtaking views of the crystal clear cobalt blue and emerald green waters that surround the Georgian Bay. Swimmers and snorkelers (but not necessarily divers) will enjoy the warm summer months of mid-June to end of August.
Although the recommend time to spend on the island is 1 to 2 hours (the main attractions are the Flower Pots, which can all be seen and visited within 30 minutes), you can spend as much time on the island as you wish. Six backcountry (no electricity, water, etc) camping sites for anyone wishing to get more intimate...
