I cannot believe the Banting Homestead has been open to the public for years and I have not visited, living in Alliston since 1986. I saw a post regarding an open house event on Remembrance Day. So after attending the Cenotaph Service in Alliston I headed north on C.3 to the beautiful homestead. There is so much I did not know about Sir Frederick Banting. What an accomplished individual. Inventor, activist, painter, veteran, he did it all. And he grew up just north of us. They have done a beautiful job of building a visitor centre as well as restoring rooms in the original house with many displays. The President of the Foundation greeted me with a wealth of information, and the Program Director, Kait Perez Diaz took me on a most intending tour of the home. Read moreVisited in September 2024, unaware that visits were by appointment only. We were greeted on arrival by the program director, Kait, who gave us a brief tour of the house and the exhibits.
Having been type 1 since 2001, I was impressed by her knowledge, enthusiasm, and curiousity about new treatment methods.
It was interesting to compare the approach of the Banting homestead vs the Banting house in London. Banting house felt dry and academic, while the staff at the homestead presented it as a project of passion.

The museum took us back in time where we learned about a man that brought hope and life to so many people and animals. There were only two of us visiting here today, hopefully, more people will visit this great little museum in Alliston packed with so much interesting information about a man and his journey to a great discovery.
