Super interesting visit to the Campbell Carriage Factory Museum in Sackville, New Brunswick. It’s one of only two surviving carriage factories in North America and the only one in Canada. The owners essentially simply set down their tools and walked away when the factory closed in the 1950’s so the museum is brimming with fascinating artifacts. All stages of carriage construction are in the factory - from cutting the logs to the careful construction of the wheels and body to upholstering the seats and painting the final product. There is a blacksmith’s shop on the site as well since a substantial portion of each carriage (or sleigh) was made of iron. There are also very interesting pieces of agricultural equipment like a large wooden hay baler was shared by numerous families over the winter months to bale hay that had been grown in the fertile Tantramar marshes over the summer months and then stored in hay barns. The owners of the factory - the Campbell family - not only made carriages and sleighs but also was involved in the undertaking business so there are unique artifacts related to this line of work. For example, a wicker casket that essentially served as a body bag and was used to transport the newly deceased to the funeral home before the body was placed in a wooden coffin. Admission is by donation and all visitors get a personalized tour by enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. Would highly recommend!

What a great museum to see and worth the small detour off the main road. Lots of local history and especially interesting for anyone interested in woodworking

Wonderful little museum - a really nice surprise that we found by chance. Great for a short stop. The guide gave us a perfect tour. No entrance fee!

We stopped here on a rainy day. It's a great rainy day activity. The guide was full of knowledge about the history of the people, land, carriages and the tools. I could have stayed here all day, there's so much to look at. My favorite was the hearses. I just love anything old and learning about how life...

Phenomenal, had two lovely people give me a tour of the place. Very cool and informative, would definitely recommend! Entry was by donation, and from my last minute email asking about availability the next day to saying goodbye, I really got to experience a great slice of East Coast...
