I have mixed feelings about Springs Church. I've been a member for a number of years. The messages are great. But in the last few years, I feel that the pastor is absent. I had a family member come in for a month and was excited for them to meet the pastor...my pastor...but in all five Sundays, we only saw the pastor on a recorded clip talking about the importance of giving. With the understanding that he is busy, I wonder if we have a pastor who we can access and speak to every once in a reasonable while.
Secondly, the message of giving is over-emphasized. I have tried to reconcile that through the years but can't seem to. In fact, I feel that the message has the opposite effect on me and a few others with whom this discussion is had. Inasmuch as the message of giving is there and Biblical, in principle, people give because they love. Love should compel people to give rather than a 10 minute solicitation. In a relationship with anyone, we want to give naturally...because we love the person. We want to give gifts, time, money...whatever it is. But if someone I love tells me that I should give them these things, I will run in the opposite direction. Very fast. I am a natural giver and will give the very garments I have on my back. I have had to create a peace of mind with God about identifying other places for me to still give without having to be begged. The earth is the Lord's and everything in it so God doesn't really need to BEG me to give back to Him. It's part of my relationship with Him.
Thirdly, with the the emphasis to give, there is no record of where our giving goes. I have gone to churches where those records are readily available for the members to see with an analysis of where the the money goes. I have seen records that have good years of abundance and OK years and years where there's a deficit. One of the principles of good stewardship is accountability. As individuals, companies, hospitals, cooperations, and even churches, accountability is key. When people have a good sense about where their giving goes, then there is the feeling of being part of something where people see results. I love seeing when we need to give $xx more to fulfill a Watoto goal. But that's such a small part of...
Read moreI've attended Springs Church for many years, and have quite enjoyed my experiences there until recently. With the ongoing struggles of the Indigenous community all across North America, it's become vital that the church promote spiritual healing. Canada has been trying in their efforts to promote Truth and Reconciliation because of the painful history of European colonization, the role the church played in perpetuating violence against Indigenous people (through the Indian Residential/day schools, the Doctrine of Discovery, etc, etc). I strongly believe it is vital that at the very least, land acknowledgment occur during church service times. Springs Church was not even willing to engage in meaningful conversation with me. I have supported this church (by way of offerings and tithes quite faithfully over a span of many years)and in the end only made to feel I did not have a voice. Land acknowledgment is a must when it comes to conducting meetings, important events, etc, as a way to honour the First People’s of this land we call Canada. I have seen displays of patriotism during service times, on Canada Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas, Easter…I guess land acknowledgment is a little too much for Springs to handle. I’d like to say thank you, your rejection was a blessing in disguise, because it led me to reflect on my Indigenous spirituality hence reclaiming my Cree beliefs and worldview separate from...
Read moreVery appropriate message for the season.
Very friendly church. With a real sense of community. Lots of amazing people in the service team.
Here are the notes from the service we attended.
Mathew 17:14-20 You could not cure him because of your unbelief.
Mathew 21;:20-22 If you have faith and do not doubt.
Your faith level corresponds directly with you Word level.
If you abide in me, I will abide in you.
We have to do our part of pressing into God.
Abide in ALL things.
This means we have to learn to trust God in everything.
If you have faith and do not doubt in you heart.
This means if we have doubt we need to have scriptures ready to reply to that doubt.
This is why the word must ABIDE in me.
This means we have to work, work, work, to obtain the authority we have in Christ.
And this Authority comes from the word of God.
If you are not dwelling and abiding in God's word you you will be overcome by fear.
If you have doubt in your mind but have faith in your heart God can still come through.
So when you have a doubt about a matter you need to go and find the Word that answers that doubt.
We must realize that the Bible says that we are healed already.
So we need to prepare ourselves in advance so that the Word of God does abide in us already before we meet our doubt...
