So me and my Wife are currently in Sal, Cape Verde/Cabo Verde, Africa 🌍 on holiday from our home in Manchester, England 🏴.
We headed to the Salinas De Pedra De Lume(Salt Mines) in a car we had rented from Santa Maria, Sal, Cape Verde and we drove up to the salt mine, Its 6,000 CVE each(€6 each) to enter your can pay cash ONLY( No Card so take cash out before you get there as it's quite remote).
You walk through a tunnel in a cave then you are at the top looking down at the Salt Mines and Salt pools where many people swim/float in the salt baths, Unique experience and really a must see/do when in Sal.
If you want to see sea Turtles 🐢 when you drive down away from the salt Mines take a left at the Small White Church(On your Right) and there is a small bay known as the Ancient Hanger and there is a small fisherman's boats and small area where the fisherman bring in their fish and gut them and through the guts in the bay where the sea turtles come to feast on the guts, The best time is around 12noon but the bay to the right of the little harbour is another great place to see the sea turtles again around 12noon.

Read moreWe went there twice - it shows you we had a really nice experience. The second time we went there was on our own accord, just to be able to float as long as we wanted to, because when you visit the place as part of a tour, of course, you are rushed to go to the next adventure. If you plan to go there by yourself and let’s say, you are based in Santa Maria or the hotels nearby, take the minibus from the central bus station in Santa Maria or somewhere along the motorway (there are enough bus stops or you put your hand up). It costs around 1,20€. The bus leaves you at the bus station in Espargos - the town past the airport. From there you can take a taxi to Pedra de Lume for 500 escudos or 5€. Make sure you get the driver’s mobile number to call them to take you back from the salinas to the town after you finish with the bath. If you take a taxi from Santa Maria to there, expect to be charged 35-40€ one way. Entrance - 6€, shower to rinse the salt - 1€. To buy a kilo of their salt - 2€. My personal opinion is that the shower and the packet of salt is a rip off. Just a personal opinion. If you’ve got time, go and see that church you will pass just before you arrive. It’s beautiful to see it and to look at the sea. Rule number 1 when in the salty water: don’t be silly to swim. It’s painful when the water gets into your eye 😂 The mural in one of the pictures is across the street from the bus station in Espargos. And please, please, please, take dog food with you or any kind of food dogs will eat!!! There are few dogs over there - the skinniest I saw on the island. One of them had babies. All the supermarkets sell cat...
Read moreOne of the best attractions on Cape Verde island of Sal is Pedra do Lume, which is an old volcano crater where they had a salt extraction plant. As you enter through a tunnel into the crater, you are presented with a lunar like landscape with salt extraction pools. It will cost you €5 to enter, and inside you can explore the old machinery from early 1800 used in the salt extraction process as well as look at the salt pools as well as taking a dip in them, not quite as the dead sea but not far from. There are toilets and showers which cost €1 to use. There is also a small Spa and a restaurant with nice views over the crater. As with most attractions on Sal you have to go off road to get there though this is one of the easier places to access. Turn off the road at the church just before the road ends and follow the dirt track up the hill to the...
