Having just arrived to town, we were a bit nervous about the logistics. So here's my recommendations: - we took a taxi to the gate from downtown and it cost 8,000 pesos. - yes, it's 5000 pesos per person to go through the private property that's the first 5 mins of the hike. If you go 200 meters farther (from Puerto Natales) you should be able to take the gravel road and bipass the gate so that it's free. It's so deserted that I doubt you'd get "caught". If you do pay, the guy is a bumbling old fart who is pretty uncompressible. - the hike is quite challenging with loose dirt for the first part of the descent. The hike never requires one to get on all fours, but it's consistently steep. The bottom part has ropes to hold on to; use them. - like others said, it's windy (but when we went it was ~12C and sunny and the wind was welcome as you get quite warm climbing). - the views are incredible and worth the climb. But it's hard work and the 2 hours round-trip is fairly intense. Down is not necessarily easier than up because of the steepness, though it's faster and less tiring. - we planned to hitchhike back to town. We walked about 1 km (of the 8 km) and a nice local picked us up. Overall, really great ~3-4 hour excursion that totally exceeded expectations in terms of ease of logistics, views, and trail.

Terrible experience trying to enter. It is a public space and there are people who invaded the land to built their house and they are charging admission illegally. We refused to pay and they insulted us and become violent. We had no choice but to leave. It is ILLEGAL, DON’T PAY! We found a route less than 1 km forward (towards Punta Arenas) that took us to the mountain. It was a nice walk almost to the top with a beautiful view (2 hours walking)

This is the starting point if you'd like to climb Dorotea. The climb itself is very easy and should take just over an hour (30 minutes extra if you enjoy taking it slow). The family who's house is built in the way of this sell tickets for the entrance for 5000 pesos currently. Pretty expensive but it's what you expect in this sort of area. The views from the top are pretty astounding and totally worth it!

Good way to kill an afternoon in Puerto Natales. The $5,000 admission is pretty steep frankly, but the walk up the hill is nice and the views from the top are great. It's around a 400m ascent, takes about an hour each way. You can walk along the escarpment at the top for a while if you want to extend the walk. It's about a 15 minute taxi from town, $4,500. We walked back which took around 2 hours. That walk isn't especially interesting though so I wouldn't recommend doing...
