Plaza de Armas de Santiago

Plaza de Armas de Santiago

Plaza de Armas is the main square in Santiago, Chile, and one of the most important historical landmarks in the city. Established in 1541 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, it has served as the political, social, and religious center of Santiago for centuries. The square is surrounded by significant buildings, including the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the Royal Court Palace (now the National History Museum). It's a vibrant public space where locals and tourists gather, often featuring street performers, artists, and cultural events. The square also has a statue of Pedro de Valdivia and a fountain commemorating the colonial era. It's a must-visit spot for anyone exploring Santiago's rich history and culture.
While Plaza de Armas is a bustling and historically rich area, tourists should remain cautious and vigilant while exploring. Like many popular urban centers, the square can attract pickpockets and opportunistic thieves who target distracted visitors or those displaying valuables like phones, cameras, or jewelry. Purse snatchers and phone thieves are known to operate in crowded areas, so it’s important to keep belongings secure and out of sight. Avoid walking alone, especially in less crowded sections or side streets, and it’s strongly advised not to visit the area after dark, as the risk of theft or other incidents increases. Staying aware of your surroundings, traveling in groups, and using common sense can help ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to this iconic Santiago landmark.

Title: It’s a great place to start your Santiago’s tour
Plaza das Armas is a great place to start your Santiago’s tour since is downtown really center located and has almost everything around it. You will also find lots of tourism agencies and guides trying to sell you some tours that you can take it or not. You will also find the Santiago’s Free Walking tour that starts around there and it’s a great choice to visit all streets of Santiago for free and understand where you are in the city to go out and explore more on your own.

Plaza de Armas, the vibrant heart of Santiago, is a must-visit destination! This bustling hub is alive with energy, attracting tourists from far and wide. When we were there, the beautiful square was abuzz with numerous attractive activities, from couples dancing the lively Chilean rhythms to street performers like the mesmerizing golden Buddha statue. But what truly makes this place special were the friendly and stunningly handsome and beautiful men and women police officers, who like live midels and add a touch of warmth and charm to the experience. Their welcoming smiles and helpful nature make exploring this iconic plaza an absolute delight!

Beautiful place, astonishing. There's a subway station that is right under this Plaza and you can walk there. Be ready to take lots of pictures, because the architecture is incredible. If you go when the sun is setting (which might vary depending on when you're there), the light will be perfect (as you see in the picture), however, it will be full of people. In the morning it's a bit less crowded.
I've heard people saying you should be careful because you might be robbed and not even notice, but I honestly think that's an overstatement. However, precaution is never too much, right?

Plaza de Armas is the bustling heart of Santiago, Chile, offering a blend of historical significance and vibrant local culture. The square is surrounded by impressive architecture, including the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Central Post Office. It's a perfect spot for people-watching, enjoying street performances, and soaking in the lively atmosphere. "Santiago Chile Travel guide" by Robert Rio which I purchased on Amazon, was extremely helpful. It provided insightful information on the history of Plaza de Armas, as well as recommendations for nearby attractions and eateries.

This is a really large park and great for a big walk. There’s not a huge number of trees, so on a sunny day it’s hard to find much shade but at least there is plenty of seating throughout the different areas. At one end of the park there is a restaurant complete with outdoor seating but unfortunately it seemed to be closed when I visited in the morning. A dedicated section for dogs is present and the large open spaces were being used by groups exercising, plus lots of joggers round the perimeter path. Playground area, water features and ponds, plus lots of statues and sculptures provide plenty of entertainment as you’re wandering through. Around the water features and ponds there’s also plenty of wildlife such a flamingos.
With the mountainous backdrop and nice view of the central skyscrapers at one end the whole place remains very attractive. My only criticism would be the dusty nature of all the paths, which are made more of sand than gravel or concrete - prepare for dirty feet if you’re wearing flip flops! As a public open space it’s great though, whether you want total relaxing or watching the bustling world go by.

Chile Lindo fonda was amazing. Not packed despite so many people visiting. Everything is well spread out to allow for people to enjoy the park and attractions. Amazing atmosphere. I think the best finds I've been to in Santiago. Oooo and choripan michelada empanadas and terremotos everywhere!!! We settled by the main stage so the kids could enjoy themselves and queues for food and drink were smaller. Loved the mini zoo. Beautiful to see the staff ensuring the animals and children were safe. Train is always a big hit and the horse riding!!! Plus all the usual Fonda games!!! Love love love this fonda

A beautiful park with lots of greenery and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s well-maintained, including the toilets, and there are plenty of places to sit and relax. It’s a great spot for a picnic or just to chill. There’s even a designated area for dogs to play, which is a nice touch.
However, the roads and the dog park are incredibly dusty. My dog ended up looking like a piece of mud after playing there! I feel like there could be a better solution than having so much dust on the paths—it really takes away from the experience.
Overall, it’s a lovely park, but the dusty roads…. Omg 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

Dude, this place is INCREDIBLE. They have awesome rides. There was this freak show going around when I was there with people dressed as vampires, zombies and other scary things. And it was great. The actors were really really good, very in character and really scared me sometimes.
The scary house is paid apart from your entrance but if you're into scary stuff I super reccomend it. You will feel scared. And then you'll laugh about it. It's fun. There are 2 scary houses in the same place, but I'm pretty sure you can get a deal for after 5 or 6pm
The food in this place is heaven. Best hamburger I had in Chile. I absolutely recommend it. Not to mention that it is HUGE. A giant delicious burguer. And the fries are great too. Basically I had my best meal of Chile in Fantasilandia
It is very easy to get there and there is a lot to do. There are not many lines for the rollercoasters, and I went on all the rides I wanted to (basically the entire park) in just one day.
Graf D.Graf D.
Poor man‘s Disneyland - in a good way. The screams of joyful terror coming from the rides are just as loud, the waiting lines much shorter and the admission fee costs even less than a tenth of the big American originals. (Around 20 USD per adult, kids half price, January 2024)
They offer rides for all ages, from gentle carousels to terrifying roller coasters.
Everything is a little smaller and - of course - lacking all the lore from known comics and movies, but the core amusement park business is the same.
They do not want you to take food inside and might check your bags. Bringing water is okay. There are a lot of mostly greasy options to eat inside, not cheap, but not as absurdly overpriced as in the big US parks.
Note: online booking, which is even cheaper, only works for Chilean nationals.

There are some attractions missing, but it's mostly because it's about to move somewhere bigger, still the attractions remaining are good and safe, some still remain since the very beginning.
There's a zone for kids and at the entrance of every attraction are instructions and guidelines related to minimum height, warning about leaving their belongings in a locker or a safe place before getting inside due to some attractions have very strong and sudden turns and twists to lose objects.
Overall, it is a great place to enjoy with a group and lose the fear, or at least try.
Careful, things are expensive inside.
But service got better over the years.
