This is the only lagoon in which were flamingos in May, there were a lot of them. But you can only walk along the paved path. And we saw birds that were relatively close, but most of them were far away and we could not really look at them. The road to the lagoon is being repaired, there are many tracks on the way. And we could not find the way for a long time to this place. Entrance is 3000 clp per person, groups of tourists are brought here to watch the sunset. We liked be here, but it's a pity that there is little where you can walk, although the lagoon is huge

So you haven't seen flamingos. After visiting this park, you still wouldn't have seen them. Because they are far from the paths. And because they don't care for you. Neither do the staff in the park. The drive there is through a very rough road with next to no signs. The staff does nothing but to take your ticket money. Dirty bathrooms and no drinks or food although it's far from the nearest town. Anyway, bring a hat, water and binoculars. But better enjoy the panorama of volcanoes on the other side of the highway.

A great salt flat that almost rivals Uyuni in Bolivia (The Mirror of Sky). You can walk around paths built out of the salt dirt. There is a lake with constant shallow water and flamingos. The downside, which makes it less picturesque, is that you can not take the same kind of reflection pictures you would do in Uyuni. The water is smelly with silt, the park managers forbid people from walking into it. It's about 50-min drive from San Pedro De Atacama. The road condition is surprisingly good.

Surreal landscape as well as a great chance to do some flamingo watching. We went in January and there weren't loads of then in the lagoon (<100). Having said that, a few of them were just a few feet from us and we got a great view. The salt lagoon is itself worth it. Went as part of the "red rocks" tour which was an all day event - beautiful landscape throughout but would have been just doing chaxa lagoon as we had a busy few days before.

Great place to visit while in San Pedro. You can buy the ticket in advance, about 6.000 clp per chilean adult. They have free parking and the road is very good if you are planning to rent a car. You will be able to see flamingos and beautiful landscapes. I really recommend go get there around 17.30 hrs and catch the sunset in spot, it is truly amazing. Unfortunately it gets a little crowded and I was somewhat annoyed by the noise.

Really great... If you have a pair of binoculars or an SLR camera with a zoom lens. The Laguna itself is vast and a unique site to see if you are in the Atacama desert. It's very windy and sunny so remember to bring a hat and your windbreaker. Mountains provide a beautiful backdrop for the flamingos. But they are rather far away most of the time.
